Teachers always have found that teaching and learning become 21________ (enjoyable) when students are actively involved in the lesson. Their active engagement, however, does not come automatically. In most cases, teachers have to find ways to get them 22 ________ (involve).
Hai K. P. Huynh, 23________ English teacher at American - Vietnamese International English Centre demonstrates how teachers can get students more actively engaged in the learning process and take charge of their learning by giving them the opportunities to find and correct mistakes by 24________.
The effective way is to prepare an activity 25 ________ students take over the role of correcting mistakes, which is normally done by the teacher. The teacher purposefully becomes the ‘mistake maker’.
This technique definitely brings forth several benefits. For instance, by switching the role of the ‘mistake corrector’, the teacher can often observe that students get excited. The degree of excitement is increased when the class 26________ (divide) into two teams to compete with each other in finding and correcting the mistakes.
Another benefit is 27 ________ they have the opportunity to identify the possible mistakes on their own instead of the teacher’s 28________ (tell) them what the mistakes are. This technique also helps the teacher check his or her student’s understanding of a grammar point or comprehension of a reading task. It 29________ be used to reinforce and improve their production skills such as writing and pronunciation.
30________ the activity is a simple technique, it is very effective in getting students’ attention and participation. It can easily be developed to satisfy teachers’ needs.

However, being forced to recycle often means we already have far more material than we need, we are dealing with the 31 ________ of that over-consumption. It would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home 32________.
Statistics have shown that the 33________ amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. A large number of companies believe that they can attract customers’ attention and 34________ their purchasing desire by over-packaging their goods, thus gaining more profits.
Without doubt, too much packaging is doing damage to the environment. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which may cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the 35________ itself uses energy. Therefore, the 36________ is not to produce such items in the first place.
Food waste is another serious issue we need to 37________ immediately. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. Fortunately, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have always learned to 38 ________ packaging with quality, which is especially true when it comes to food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
Luckily, there are signs of hope at 39 ________. As more and more people come to recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary materials are being collected. However, despite the ongoing campaigns to 40 ________ consumers’ green awareness, we still have a long way to go.

A Beach in Bod-rum, Turkey, saw the horror of a human tragedy on Sept 2. A little boy, dressed in a red shirt and blue shorts, lay face down in the sand. Sadly, 3-year-old Alan Kurdi would never wake up again.
Alan drowned along with at least 12 Syrians, including his 5-year-old brother and mother. They were on a journey from Turkey to Greece. Trying to make their simple but dangerous dream of a safe home a reality, they paid with their lives. The tragic photographs of Alan’s lifeless body shocked the world. “What has drowned in the Mediterranean(地中海)is not only the refugees, but humanity,” said Turkish President.
Refugees, according to the UN, are people escaping war or persecution. Their situation is often so dangerous that they cross national borders to look for safety in nearby countries. The Kurdis wanted to head of Europe by crossing to the Greek island of Kos from Bodrum by boat.
The Kurdis’ tragedy was just one story from over 1,800 people who have died in the first six months of this year while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, according to statistics released by the United Nations. Migrants, however, are not necessarily refugees. A migrant may leave his or her country for many reasons apart from war, terrorism, and persecution. They may seek employment, life with their family, or study in another country.
European countries have taken different approaches to the crisis. Germany and France are opening their doors to more asylum(避难)seekers, those who say they are refugees but the status has not been decided by the UNHCR or a government. Other countries, such as Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, have been unwilling to take a large number of refugees for various reasons including economic problems and safety concerns.

Exciting concertos(协奏曲)from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons can boost mental alertness, according to research from North-umbria University. The findings, which are published in Experimental Psychology, show that the exciting first movement(乐章), in particular, is capable of enhancing attention and memory.
In the experiment a group of 14 young adults were given a mental concentration task to perform. They were asked to press the space bar on a keyboard when a green square appeared on screen and ignore different colored circles and squares that appeared at intervals. The participants carried out this task both in silence and while listening to each of the four concertos while their brain activity was measured using EEG(脑电图扫描)brain imaging.
Results showed that participants responded correctly faster when listening to the exciting Spring concerto. When listening to the concerto, the average response time in performing the task was 393.8 milliseconds(毫秒)as opposed to 408.1 milliseconds when the task was carried out in silence. This response time rose to 413.3 milliseconds when they listened to the slower and sadder Autumn music, therefore showing a decrease in mental capacity.
Psychologist Dr. Leigh Riby said, “The Spring movement enhanced overall activity within the brain but had an exaggerated effect on the area of the brain that’s important for emotional processing. It seemed to give rise to particular imagery in the brain and evoke positive, contented feelings which translated into higher levels of cognitive functioning.”
Dr. Riby suggests that the Spring movement is particularly special and be used in therapy and is, in fact, quite a familiar piece to most people as it has been used successfully in marketing to induce mood and influence behavior. He also found that the key in which the music was written had no impact on brain performance. While the Spring concerto, which is written in a major key, did not. He added, “This experiment shows that cognitive capacity is enhanced when pleasant and arousing stimuli are introduced.”
63. What do we know about the research from Northumbria University?
A. It was conducted in four different seasons of a year.
B. It showed sad and slow music can boost mental alertness.
C. The results of the research have been published.
D. It was done by a group of 14 young adults.

Ⅳ. Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
71 Are you working with your computer routinely either as an office employee or a game lover? Are your eyes dry, watery, blurry, seeing double or sensitive to light? If your answer is a “yes”, you are likely one of many people today who suffer from digital eyestrain, also called computer-vision syndrome(综合症). What on earth is this syndrome coming from? What can we do to deal with this problem?
Eyestrain is often related to the amount of exposure to screens, the distance from eyes to screens and the use of multiple screens simultaneously(同时). However, studies have also shown that the blue light produced by digital devices today reaches further into the eyes than other kinds of light. This light actually assists attention during the day but can result in interrupted sleep patterns at night.
Years of scientific researches indicate that eyestrain isn’t necessarily an unavoidable problem for those who deal with computer work in the daily base. There are ways you can adopt which can overcome the problem considerably. To begin with, your computer screen should be high-resolution(高分辨率), at least 50 centimeters wide diagonally and may require a screen filter to decrease reflections. Also, be aware that “computer glasses”, which cut down glare and blue light, are available.
Besides, to reduce your risk for computer-vision syndrome, take frequent breaks during your computer workday. Many workers take only two 15-minute breaks from their computer throughout their day. According to a recent study, eyestrain are significantly reduced when computer workers take four additional five-minute “mini-breaks” throughout their workday.
Finally, many of us fall into bad habits while using digital screens, which only worsen the effects of eyestrain. While viewing digital screens, many people blink(眨眼)one third less often than they usually do. Place a reminder on your computer to “blink” so that your eyes don’t dry out.
