Then we spent our last week in Hong Kong, which I think is very different from Beijing. Its the noisiest and busiest place Ive ever seen. We didnt find Hong Kong very relaxing at all. 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

SAN FRANCISCO — A phone app (应用程序) in San Francisco gives information about open parking spots.City officials in San Francisco introduced the app to try to reduce traffic jams in the city, but some say it raises safety concerns.

In this city, drivers searching for parking spots lead to 30 percent of all downtown jams, city officials think. Now San Francisco has found a solution — a phone app for spotseekers that displays information about areas with available spaces. The system, introduced last month, relies on wireless sensors (感应器) fixed in streets and city garages that can tell within seconds if a spot has opened up.

Monique Soltani, a TV reporter, said she and her sister spent 25 minutes on Friday trying to park.We were praying to the parking god that wed find a spot she said.“If we had the app, we would not have to pray to the parking god.” But the system could come with serious consequences.

Some people say that drivers searching for parking could end up focusing on their phones, not the road.It could be really distracting (使分心的) said Daniel Simons, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois.

City officials acknowledge the potential problem. They are urging drivers to pull over before they use the citys iPhone app, or to do so before they leave home.Nathaniel Ford, executive director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, said safety could actually improve if drivers quickly found a spot instead of circling and getting frustrated.

San Francisco has put sensors into 7,000 parking spots and 12,250 spots in city garages. If spaces in an area open up, the sensors communicate wirelessly with computers that in turn make the information available to app users within a minute, said Mr.Ford, of the transportation agency. On the app, a map shows which blocks have lots of places (blue) and which are full red.

More than 12,000 people have downloaded San Franciscos app, which is available now only for the iPhone but which city officials say they hope to bring to all similar devices.

When it is started up, the citys parking app warns drivers not to use the system while in motion. But safety advocates said that might not be sufficient. After all, they say, texting while driving is illegal in California and in many states, but a number of surveys, including one by the Pew Research Center, show that many Americans do it anyway.

Elizabeth Stampe, executive director of Walk San Francisco, a pedestrian advocacy group, said she hoped the new parking app would lead to fewer accidents.

Its an innovative idea she said.“The safe way for people to use the device is for them to pull over, which they know they should do.The question is whether they will.”

But Ms.Soltani, the TV reporter, said using the app would probably join the group of activities already performed by drivers.

Were already looking at Google Maps and Face book on the phone while we drive she said.“Arent we always looking at something on our phone, or changing the radio, or drinking coffee? Youre always slightly distracted when youre driving.”

Do you enjoy watching beautiful sunsets and seeing wildlife in some of the best parts of Wisconsin? Do you like being around people who share the same respect and love for natural resources? If you say “yes”then a fisheries biologist is a great career choice for you.

As you can probably guess, education is very important.A Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries or biology is strongly recommended. Many biologists have a Masters degree. But its not only good education that prepares you for a career as a fisheries biologist — field experience is also important.Volunteer work, internships (实习) and shortterm fish technician positions are good ways to gain valuable training that can give you an edge in the competitive job market.

In addition to good education and field experience, a fisheries biologist needs other skills.Youll spend a lot of time working with the public, so its important to feel comfortable talking to a variety of people.Good communication, listening, and presentation (陈述) skills are a must.

A common misconception among many people is that fisheries biologists get to fish all the time. Most biologists wish that were true. But as a fisheries biologist, you are especially busy during the fishing season, which leaves little time for you to actually go fishing. Its sad, but true.

Each day brings something different in the life of a fisheries biologist. In the spring and fall, you spend a lot of time on the water shocking fish in order to sample the population, studying fish, and talking with people. The winter is spent analyzing (分析) fish data and communicating with the public.

So if you find fish interesting and fun to learn about, and like working both outside and inside, consider a career as a fisheries biologist.Youll never be bored!

CThe benefits of being a fisheries biologist.

DSome good ways to gain valuable training.

解析B 推理判断题。文章第二段和第三段主要讲的是成为一名渔业生物学家的要求,不仅要有好的教育,还需要有丰富的野外经验。故选B

A funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolution: we stopped talking to one another.

I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were  walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and I became invisible, absent from the conversation.

The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now_it_makes_people_sitting_next_to_you_feel_absent.Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voicemail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.

As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation (疏远) index goes up.You cant even call a person to get the phone number of another person anymore.Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.

I am not against modern technology.I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voicemail system, and an email account. Giving them up isnt wise, theyre a great help to us. Its some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.

More and more, I find myself hiding behind email to do a job meant for conversation, or being relieved that voicemail picked up because I didnt really have time to talk. The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier, or at least facilitating my antisocial instincts.

So Ive put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging with people who live near me, no cell phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voicemail pick up when Im at home.

29Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

AThe Advance of Communications Technology

BThe Consequences of Modern Technology

CThe Story of the Communications Revolution

DThe Automation of Modern Communications

解析B 标题归纳题。本文主要论述了现代技术的影响。

Athe people sitting beside you have to go away to receive phone call

Byou can hardly get in touch with the people sitting beside you

Cmodern technology makes it hard for people to have a facetoface talk

Dpeople can now go to work without going to the office

解析C 句意理解题。第一段作者提出:通讯革命使我们不再面对面地交谈;第二段作者举自己生活的一例来予以说明;第三段作者感慨Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent.即其意应为:现在技术使人们很难有面对面的交谈。故选C项。

31The passage implies that ________.

Amodern technology is bridging people

Dmodern technology is interrupting our communication

解析B 推理判断题。根据第四段可推断现代技术正在疏远人们之间的关系,故选B项。

32What does the underlined word facilitating in Paragraph 6 mean?

ADeepening.   BLimiting.

CHelping.   DInstalling.

D

There are robots all around us. Some do very complicated (复杂的) jobs like flying airplanes and driving subway trains. And some do one simple job. When an automatic washing machine is switched on, water pours in. The machine waits until the water is warm enough for washing clothes. It does this by feedback (反馈). Information about what is happening is feedback into the robot to tell what to do next. Our eyes, ears and other senses are our feedback. They tell us what is going on around us. So robots are like human beings in two ways.

They work and they have feedback.

In some ways robots are better than human beings. They work quickly and do not make mistakes. They do not get bored doing the same job over and over again. And they never get tired. So robots are very useful in factories. They can be taught to do many different jobs. First their electronic brain must be shown how the job is done. A person moves the robots “arms” and “hands” through each part of the job.

The most intelligent (智能的) robots can move and see. Their eyes are cameras. Their fingers can feel shapes and sizes of the objects. These robots have computer brains linked to their eyes and fingers, which control their actions. The expensive “Times New Roman” — the most intelligent robots are used in scientific research. They do such a job as handling radioactive materials.

33In this passage the author tells us that ________.

Arobots are very popular

Bthere are various kinds of robots

Cwe see robots only at certain times

Drobots can be easily controlled

解析A 细节理解题。由第一段第一句话There are robots all around us.得出选项A正确。

34What does the author seem to inform you about robots?

AThey should be greatly improved.

BThey will probably take over human beings in the future.

CThey are very helpful and useful to humans.

DThey are machines that break down a lot.

解析C 推理判断题。由第三段They work quickly and do not make mistakes ...And they never get tired. So robots are very useful in factories.(机器人工作快……不会觉得累),可知机器人对人类有很大的帮助,故答案选C

35The author says that in industry ________.

Arobots break down a lot

Brobots can do many jobs

Crobots only get in the way

Drobots sometimes cause trouble

解析B 细节理解题。由第三段第六句话They can be taught to do many different jobs.可知选B

参考范文:

Dear Manager

Much to my regret, I write this letter to have a complaint against one of your shop assistants concerning bad service in the course of our shopping yesterday.

Yesterday we bought a bottle of imported powdered milk from your supermarket. However, when it was opened, to our great surprise, we found that an ugly worm was “swimming” inside the powdered milk.Immediately, we took the bottle to the shop assistant who sold the powdered milk, hoping to get a satisfactory explanation.Things became worse when we asked for a sincere apology and another bottle of imported powdered milk. The shop assistant told us that he would meet our demands unless we could provide enough proof saying the worm was from Holland, as the letters on the bottle say it was made in Holland. What a joke!

Now we ask you to look into this matter. We demand that the shop assistant make an official apology to us and a new bottle of  powdered milk be delivered to us as soon as possible.

Yours respectfully

A faithful customer
