Hobbies are very important in our life. We all should have some good hobbies.
When I was a young kid, I showed great interest in collecting stamps. I had a stamp album full of stamps. It brought me a lot of fun. I often exchanged stamps with my classmates and we often talked about them after class. Now I still have the stamp album. Every time I look at the stamps in it, all the good memories come back.
When I was about fourteen years old, I became interested in collecting CDs. Now I have four boxes of CDs. I still listen to them in my spare time.
Now I like collecting coins. Collecting coins is not only fun, it also helps me learn about the stories behind them. But it’s a very expensive hobby. It costs me a lot of money each year. Luckily, I work in a large company and my job pays me a lot. So I can afford it.
Having a hobby is important. When you have a hobby, you may not want to do something harmful such as drinking or smoking. However, on the other hand, having a hobby may cost you a lot of money. So if you don’t have much money, find a hobby that doesn’t require much money.

Gossip (闲话) moves so quickly that few people have time to cover their ears, even if they want to.
“I hate it when others gossip about me,” said Mandy Miraglia, 16, a high school student from California, “but to be honest, gossip with my friends makes me feel I am trusted and belong to the group.” Miraglia is not the only person who feels like that.
Gossip has long been looked down on as little more than nonsense and bad manners. But recent research has shown that gossip has many positive effects on your social life.
“There has been a trend among people to dislike gossip,” said David Sloan Wilson, a professor from the State University of New York in Binghamton, US. “But gossip appears to be a very important form of behaviour in a group of friends, defining their group membership.”
For 18 months, Kevin Kniffin, from the University of Wisconsin, US, researched the behaviour of 50 people. He found that gossip levels peaked when a sports team included a slacker,_someone who regularly missed practices or showed up late. Other members of the team would soon start to joke about the slacker’s shortcomings behind his back, because they think they are bad for the whole team.
Gossip about the mistakes of senior members helps newcomers rebuild their confidence after a failure.
It also helps relieve social and professional anxiety. Longterm studies show that people around the world devote from a fifth to twothirds or more of their daily conversation to gossip, and men appear to be just as eager for gossip as women.
It is hard to judge gossip, but it is more powerful than you think.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime is a novel about a 15yearold autistic boy named Christopher Boone. After discovering the dead body of Wellington, his neighbor’s dog, Christopher decides to find out the cause of the dog’s death. He records his findings, as he has decided that he will create a “murder mystery novel” of the situation. But like any murder mystery novel, nothing is as simple as it seems. Christopher runs into many difficult situations because of his disability. He again and again mentions how he admires Sherlock Holmes (a fictional detective), which gives me an understanding as to why he continues to look into Wellington’s death even after his father makes him promise not to.
Christopher’s story seems so true and heartfelt that it makes the novel an entertaining read. The author, Mark Haddon, had me wanting to keep reading to find out what Christopher would get himself into next.
Haddon shows how Christopher’s disability affects how he goes about solving the mystery! Christopher has difficulty in communicating or forming relationships with others, but he has a great visual (视力的) memory and ability to understand difficult math.
This book was required reading at my school, but it became more than something I had to read. Haddon showed how these disabilities affect the lives of not only the children diagnosed (诊断) with them, but also those around them.
The novel feels real because it was written from Christopher’s point of view. For example, when Christopher explains that when he was little he didn’t understand much about other people having minds, it gives the impression that he’s a real person.
I believe that teenagers sometimes aren’t sensitive to kids with mental disabilities. I think that when people read this novel, they will have a better understanding of what people with mental disabilities and those around them have to deal with on a daily basis.
25.An “autistic (in Para. 1)” person usually refers to someone who ________.
A.is unable to use his legs
B.likes reading novels
C.is disliked by people around him
D.is unable to communicate with others well
根据第一段的“because of his disability”可知Christopher Boone是个有缺陷的人,而他的缺陷是第三段中提到的“has difficulty in communicating or forming relationships with others”,故选D项。
26.According to the writer, Christopher doesn’t give up looking into the murder because ________.
A.he wants to get over his disabilities
B.he is encouraged by Sherlock Holmes
C.he wants to do something for his neighbor
D.he wants to prove to his father that he is useful
根据第一段的“He again and again mentions how he admires Sherlock Holmes (a fictional detective), which gives me an understanding as to why he continues to look into ...”
27.The passage suggests that the writer ________.
A.didn’t want to read the book at first
B.thought the book is too simple
C.found it hard to stop reading the book
D.believed the story really happened
根据第二段的“The author, Mark Haddon, had me wanting to keep reading to find out what Christopher would get himself into next.”
28.In the writer’s opinion, Haddon makes the story feel real by ________.
A.telling us the story can happen around us
B.writing from Christopher’s point of view
C.making it easy to understand the story
D.giving a lot of explanations
根据倒数第二段的“The novel feels real because it was written from Christopher’s point of view.”
C
Telford Junior League the U.K. — made up of 20 divisions ranging from under10s to under16s — has stopped publishing the real results of its matches in case the scores embarrass the young players and now records all games as either 10 wins or 11 draws.
Bosses at the league have defended the decision to stop telling the number of goals scored which they claim will help the youngsters escape from the shame of losing badly.
League bosses have defended the policy, saying it is in line with Football Association (FA) guidelines, which the FA questions. The FA says there’s a FA rule that forbids the publishing of results and league tables (比赛名次表) across all media for under8 age groups where the focus of the game is about learning to play without the pressure of scores. For older age groups, there are no rules or FA guidelines which indicate that the final score should be changed.
Some parents said, “This is because they don’t want kids embarrassed if their team has lost heavily. If that’s the case, what’s the point of having a league table up on the website at all? Kids need to learn about winning and losing from an early age. They aren’t recognizing the boys’ achievements. They might not want to embarrass the losing team but if one of the teams scores six or seven goals and that isn’t recorded, what kind of message does that send to them? They might as well not turn up.”
Stephen Clarke, manager of the under11s Wrekin Panthers team, backed the move. He said, “The children’s welfare is vital. The children who lost 200 would feel very disappointed if it was on the website. They might think of not playing. I think it’s a very good idea.”
But Mr. Clarke added there must come a point when players had to accept defeat. He said, “I think probably by the age of 15 then they have an understanding that life is a bit of a competition and we are competing with other people.”
29.Under the new policy, the result of a game 160 will be published as ________.
A.21 B.160
C.10 D.80
由第一段中的“now records all games as either 10 wins or 11 draws”可知C项正确。
30.Which of the following is included in the FA guidelines?
A.Forbidding publishing the results for under8 age groups.
B.Recording all games as either 10 wins or 11 draws.
C.Forbidding publishing the results across all media.
D.Recording the real results for over16 age groups.
31.What’s the attitude of some parents toward the policy?
A.They hold a positive attitude toward it.
B.They consider it bad for the losing team.
C.They think it does great harm to the winning team.
D.They believe it has more disadvantages than advantages.
32.Which of the following may Stephen Clarke agree with?
A.Kids should learn about losing at a young age.
B.The Telford Junior League’s policy is pointless.
C.Goals scored should not be published on the website.
D.The real results should be published for over15 age groups.
D
Unlike other starving artists everywhere, Bren Bataclan, 40, is giving his artworks away. He paints cartoon characters, neither humans nor animals, with one big eye and one small one, in beautiful colors, and he leaves his small oil paintings around Boston and other cities. And they are free.
It all started when Bataclan moved to Boston from the Midwest to teach how to make pictures with a computer. After he lost his job, he started painting what are now his signature characters. He sold 49 paintings in two days and wanted to show his gratitude (感激) somehow.
But how? The problem troubled him for years. Then he realized the people in the city were as friendly as Midwesterners in their own way. It finally came to him: He would give away his artworks and ask just one thing in return. He tied this note and his website address, bataclan. com to each canvas: “This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often.” It was the beginning of his Smile Project.
Bataclan has left his giveaways in 20 states and 20 countries. People who have found his paintings send him notes and photos. The characters make them smile, his fans tell him, and they give them hope. “It’s nice to know that my art is really making a difference ,” he says.
Since the economy is going through a hard time, Bataclan, who supports himself as a fulltime artist, has been tying a different note onto his canvases: “Everything will be all right.”
33.Bren Bataclan’s cartoon characters are ________.
A.very common B.very special
C.starving D.goodlooking

34.Bren Bataclan found his own way of painting, thanks to ________.
A.the loss of his job
B.his family’s support
C.the bad economy
D.his website bataclan. com
35.During the hard economic time, Bren Bataclan is trying to ________.
A.inspire people to be artists
B.send out notes to others
C.keep people in high spirits
D.encourage people to work hard

Dear Headmaster,
I am writing to talk about the canteen of our school. There are only a few stand in the canteen, leading to lots of students have to line up for food. It is waste of time, isn’t it? But at times the food is not fresh and does not taste deliciously. So it’s not surprising that some students chose to go to the street to buy junk food which do harm to their health. Yours,
Jack

Greener Life, Cleaner Air
It is not easy to forget the heavy smog that occurred last January. It lasted for about three weeks and affected many areas in China, causing much inconvenience and even harm to our life and health.
The incident warned us to take actions to fight for clean air before it’s too late! And I believe a green lifestyle can make a big difference to the air quality! Above all, it’s good to take buses or other means of public transportation rather than cars whenever possible. What’s more, be aware of saving water, electricity and paper. Moreover, recycle whatever we can. Last but not least, don’t forget to influence those around you to follow!
