The building of the Aswan Dam is considered a modern   22  today. At the time it was built it was second only to the dam in Zambesi. It was built to   23   the waters of the Nile. Building on the dam began in January 1960 after Egypt entered into an   24   with the Soviet Union ( 苏联 ) to allow them to build the dam. There were many problems along the way. Russian equipment brought in for the job was designed for much colder weather and did not   25   well in the heat of the Egyptian sun. Once completed, the controlled waters from the Nile would form Lake Nasser, a man-made lake   26   thousands of square miles. It would contain 157 thousand million cubic metres ( 立方米 ) of water. The impact on Egypt was both good and bad.

Before the dam was built only about 4 percent of Egypt's land was under irrigation ( 灌溉)  27  . The Dam also made much electricity for the country. Damming the Nile would get rid of the  28   floods and allow for stored water to be provided during times of drought, but it would also dam the rich silt deposits that made Egypt's land so valuable and cultivable.   Ever since the damming of the Nile, Egyptian farmers have needed to use  29  for their crops.

But, before the dam could be built, a great effort was required to save many   30   artifact (人造物体) that would have been covered by waters of Lake Nasser. One of these sites was Philae Temple.

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

People Express, founded in April 1981, grew rapidly on the basis of low fares and no-frills service. It soon became a leading airline and   31    changed the industry as firms constantly engaged in price wars to lure passengers. Then, People Express' bubble   32   because it over-expanded, consumer complaints mounted and other airlines matched its fares on popular routes. In 1986, People Express   33   hundreds of millions of dollars and was forced to sell out to Texas Air, the owner of Continental and Eastern Airlines.

In early 1987, Texas Air   34    People Express into its Continental division and industry observers believed   35    the costly fare wars would be ended. They could not have been more wrong. To stimulate business for its   36    continental Airlines, Texas Air instituted a new low fare category   37   MaxSaver. The fare offered prices that were up to 40 per cent lower than "supersaver" rates offered   38    all airlines. For example, the round-trip MaxSaver fare from New York to Houston was $70. The MaxSaver fares were immediately matched by all major airlines,  39   feared losing business.

While MaxSaver rates were low, they also had restrictions. Tickets could not be  40   or flight times modified after purchase. Passengers would have to stay over either a Saturday or Sunday.  Reservations had to be made at least two days       41   , and there were limited seats available.

Three weeks after MaxSaver rates were   42   , American Airlines announced plans to raise its discount fares and require 30-day   43    purchasing for its lowest fares. It felt it could not continue at the rates in effect. However, just 10 days   44    , American Airlines had to revise its plan. Texas Air refused to abandon the MaxSaver fare; it even extended the program into the busy summer season. Competitors went along and the price war raged on,  45   an executive's comment that "nobody's cost structure can survive MaxSavers. "

A

Despite the high technology and investment (投资) in flood defenses by the Environment Agency (环保局) , there is no way to stop all flooding — sooner or later nature will produce something that will beat even the strongest defenses.

Warning people of this danger is very important if we are to prevent the great loss of life seen fifty-three years ago. Indeed if the Flood Warning System that currently exists had been around on that cold, stormy night in January 1953, many lives would have been spared.

The Environment Agency took over the role of flood warning in 1995 from the police who had to go door to door or sound alarms to get the news known. The service is being constantly improved and a combination of better technology and increased investment following the Easter Floods of 1998 has led to the creation of Rood line and an automatic (自动) messaging system that can warn thousands of people in very little time.

Flood line 0845 988 1188 offers information and advice 24 hours a day and if warnings are in place, callers can get information either from local updates or by using a quick-dial code for their area.

The Flood Warning team in Kent has also sent letters to the people living close to the rivers or the sea and invited them to join the AVM (automated voice messaging) system. Anyone choosing to take up this free service will receive a recorded message directly to their home, business or pager telling them of the level of warning J giving them as much time as possible to carry out their flood plan and save items that cannot be replaced if lost or damaged, such as photographs or children's favorite toys.

There are two main forms of teaching in Nottingham University: seminar(研讨会) and lecture. They are very different from the sort of teaching most often used in schools and colleges.

In seminars you will be taught with discussion focusing on a text or topic set in advance in a friendly and informal atmosphere. The purpose is to provide an opportunity to try out new ideas and to think through difficulties with fellow-learners. Students develop friendships through groups, as well as learning more about other people's ideas. You can also know your tutors (指导老师) as an individual rather than a face at the end of the room.

Lectures are the most formal. There may be over a hundred in the audience and the lecture will last about fifty minutes. The value of the lecture is that it can present to a large number of people information which is not readily available in books, that it can give you an opportunity to hear a specialist develop a coherent (有条理的) argument, and that it can show visual material to a wide audience.

Your typical week's work will feel strange after school or college since there are fewer timetabled teaching hours. Each week in the first year you may attend about six lectures and four to six seminars or tutorials. For the rest of the time you are working on your own, doing the necessary reading in preparation for tutorials or writing seminar papers. When writing an essay or carrying out project work, you can often discuss with your tutors about the title and topic.

Have you ever been in a meeting while someone was making a speech and realized suddenly that your mind was a million miles away? You probably felt sorry and made up your mind to pay attention and never have daydreaming a-gain. Most of us from earliest school days,  have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time.

"On the contrary," says L. Giambra, an expert in psychology , " daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn' t get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day. . . You can't possibly do all your thinking with a conscious mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming then may be one way that the unconscious and conscious states of mind have silent dialogues   .

Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinger,a professor of psychology, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinger says," We know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures. . . Daydreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life. "

Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams which may be hard to understand. It's easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully. Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and find out a possible way of handling    them.

Daydreams cannot be predicted, they move off in unexpected directions which may be creative and full of useful ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and are a main source of creative energy   .

So the next time you catch yourself daydreaming, don' t stop. Just pay attention to your dream. It may be more important than you think.

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A—F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A.. Oxford provides a unique learning experience through a tutorial system.

B. Oxford offers a wide range of degree courses.

C. Students are expected to prepare for tutorials by themselves.

D. Students may borrow books from their own colleges.

E. There are many opportunities to enhance college life.

F. Each student has access to the language learning on campus.

57.

In all of the colleges, friends are made easily. Students may go to pubs where they can talk and rest over a mug of beer or a glass of gin. Students may also join various societies and clubs like tennis clubs or photographic clubs. If a student is interested in history, he may join a Historical Society and sometimes go there to discuss his work with other members.

58.

At the University of Oxford, students are provided with many courses which cover mainstream subjects like History, Law, Mathematics and Chemistry to subjects such as Human Sciences, Archaeology and Anthropology. All courses have a core element offering each student plenty of scope to follow his or her specific areas of interest. All Oxford programs strive to encourage students to think logically, laterally and independently.

59.

Each student is responsible for personal time planning to ensure that all the course work is completed. They meet their college tutors on a one-to-one basis or with one or two other students. The purpose of the tutorial is to review answer and theories and to raise any new points that result from the discussions. The success of the tutorial system relies on the active

exchange of ideas between the student, the tutor and other students present.

60

In order to have the active exchange of ideas with tutors and other students, students have ready access to some of the best laboratories, libraries, museums and other services in the world. The principal university research is the Bodleian, with over 6 million volumes in its central and dependent libraries. The Bodleian is a "copyright library" and can claim a copy of every book and periodical published in the United Kingdom. The library itself comprises the central buildings and numerous dependent libraries specializing in particular areas, including science and law.

61.

All university members, whether they are studying for a language degree or not, can use the Language Center. The center provides facilities for students who want to learn languages for study, research or personal interest. All the libraries in Oxford are linked with an integrated electronic library and information system.

Section D

Directions: Read the following passage.  Then answer the questions or complete the sentences according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

The coyote(丛林狼) , that clever animal of wide-open space, has come to the nation's capital. In fact, coyotes have spread to every comer of the United States, changing their behaviors to fit new environments and causing researchers to deal with a troublesome new kind of creature: the city coyote.

The coyote originally lived in the middle of the continent. One of its most obvious characters is its smartness, which has made the animal a notorious (臭名昭著的) pest. Hunters trapped, shot and poisoned more than a million coyotes in the 1900s. It's still one of America's most hunted animals. Yet the coyote has survived. How has the coyote shown this extraordinary ability? "I guess if you wanted to use one word, it'd be ' plasticity' ," says Erie Gese, an expert at Utah State University. Coyotes can live alone, in pairs, or in large packs like wolves; hunt at night or during the day; occupy a small region or an area up to 40 square miles, and live on all sorts of food, from lizards (蜥蜴) and shoes, to ants and melons.

Unbelievably people helped coyotes increase when they killed most of the wolves in the United States. The spreading of coyotes into city areas, though, is recent. They travel at night, crossing side-walks and bridges, running along roads and ducking into culverts(钻入

涵洞) and underpasses. No one knows why coyotes are moving into cities, but experts explain that more human-tolerant (不怕人的) coyotes are teaching urban survival skills to new generations.

Occasionally, coyotes might attack human beings. There have been about 160 attacks on people in recent years. Therefore, people have been consistently told not to feed coyotes or leave pet food unsecured. That, plus a large trapping program in the neighborhood, has cut down on the coyote population.

  1. What advice are the people given to cut down the population of coyotes?

  2. The underlined word "plasticity" in Paragraph 2 refers to .

  3. The aim of the passage is to .

  4. What do the coyotes pass to their younger generations?
