1. promise v. to tell someone that one will definitely do something 答应;许诺

e.g. Since you have promised to do it, you should do it.

既然你已经许诺过了,你就该说到做到。

【必背】promise somebody somethingpromise something to somebody

向某人承诺某事;答应给某人某物

promise to do something答应做某事

e.g. They promised to finish the work next week 他们承诺下周完成工作。

promise that…答应或保证

e.g.1.  They promised that all the books would be returned by Friday 他们保证所有的书籍会在周五之前归还。

e.g. The results of the first experiment are not very promising 第一次实验的结果不容乐观。

e.g. The young CEO had a successful careera comfortable salary and a promising future

这个年轻的首席执行官拥有成功的事业、丰厚的薪水、光明的前途。

 

2. straight adj. one after another in a series 连续的;不间断的

e.g. He became famous as a tabic tennis palyer after he won the championship three straight times.

在连续三次比赛获得冠军后,他作为一名乒乓运动员名声大振。

straight adv.直,直接;一直

e.g. Go straight ahead, please.

Terry was so tired he couldn't walk straight.

straight away also straight off British English spoken immediately or without delay:

e.g. I phoned my mum straight away.

 think/see straight: if you cannot think or see straight, you cannot think or see clearly:

e.g. Turn the radio down, I can't think straight.

 

3.despite prep. in spite of 不管;尽管

e.g. Despite what others may say, you should have your own opinion on things.

不管别人怎么说,你应该有自己的主见。

 

4. resort n. a place where people go on holiday or during vacation 度假胜地;旅游胜地

e. g. Qingdao is one of the leading resort cities in China.青岛是中国最著名的度假胜地之一。

短语:last/final resortwhat you will do if everything else fails

as a last resort  万不得已(作为最后手段)

e. g. Drug treatment should only be used as a last resort.

in the last resort (British English)  作为最后一着

e.g. Economic sanctions will be used only in the last resort.

first resort: what you will do first before you try other things:

e.g. In the past, your family was the first resort when looking for a job.

resort to something: formal when you must use or depend on something because nothing better is available

without resort to something

e.g. We hope they will be able to resolve the situation without resort to force.

resort to something (phrasal verb)to do something bad, extreme, or difficult because you cannot think of any other way to deal with a problem:

e.g. Officials fear that extremists may resort to violence.

5. slope n. the side of a hill or mountain 山坡

e. g. If you walk up the slope, you can get a better view.

走上这个小山坡,你会看到更好的风景。

slope v.倾斜

 

6. suit n. a set of clothes made from the same fabric (一套)衣服;套服

e.g. The headmaster wore a black suit to the graduation ceremony.

校长穿了一套黑西装参加毕业典礼。

 

7. instructor n. a person who teaches a skill or sport 教练;指导者

e.g. My driving instructor told me that I should practice driving at least ten hours a week in order to get a driver’s licence within three months.

instruct v. 教;命令;指导

   instruction n.命令;用法说明

   instructive adj. 有教育意义的;提供丰富只是的

8. gentle adj. not steep or sharp 平缓的

e.g. Though the mountain was high, for the most part the slope was very gentle, and so the climbers did not have much trouble reaching the top.

9. point v. to aim (something) 指向;把对准

e.g. It’s bad manners to point your fingers at people.

point to/ towards  显示的位置(方向),表明

e.g. He was always very keen to point out my mistakes

10. tip n. the pointed end of something 顶端; 尖端
