For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead. “We can do without railways” people say, as if motorcars and planes made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, that they’re dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes.
And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a strange line and so does a railway. What is more, it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another. It doesn’t leave you as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does, in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do. Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning. For we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, traveling at 150 miles an hour and more. Soon we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorways we can’t use because we have not enough money to buy the oil and planes we can’t fly in for the same reason.
65. Some people think the railways are dead for many reasons except that____.
A. planes and motorcars have taken the place of trains B. oil is expensive today
C. trains are slow D. railways lose money

67. According to the writer, which of the following is NOT true?
A. It is cheaper to travel by train than by plane.
B. The railway station is usually at the center of a city.
C. When you get off the plane you will find yourself right in the city center.
D. No motorcar or plane can carry as many goods as a train does.
B Glynis Davis:
I first piled on the pounds when I was in the family way and I couldn’t lose them afterwards. Then I joined a slimming club. My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I’d lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year, but it didn’t happen. Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I’d lost willpower and tried to believe that the old bags of fish and chips didn’t make any difference but the scales don’t lie.
Roz Juma:
To be honest, I never weigh myself any more I’ve learnt to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips. My idea is simple. You shouldn’t be too much thinking about food and dieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a supper-thin body. This is obviously the size I’m meant to be and, most of all, I’m happy with it.
Lesley Codwin:
I was very happy about winning Young Silmmer of the Year. I’d look in the mirror unable to believe this slim lady was me! That might have been my problem——perhaps from then on I didn’t pay any attention to myself. Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you. I feel a complete failure because I’ve put on weight again.
Ros Langfod:
Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I’d always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year. Every so often I try to go on a diet …I’m really good on a few days, then end up having the children’s leftovers or eating happily chocolate——my weakness. I’d like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children and home. I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

Although man has known about asbestos for many hundreds of years, it was not until 160 years ago that it was mined for the first time on the North American continent. H. W. Johns, owner of a New York City Supply Shop for roofers, was responsible for the opening of that first mine.
Mr. Johns was given a piece of asbestos which had been found in Italy. He experimented with the material and then showed its surprising powers to his customers. After putting on a pair of asbestos gloves, which looked much like ordinary work gloves, he took red-hot coals from the fireplace and played with them in his hands. How astonished the customers were to discover that he was not burned at all. You can well imaging that he had increasing business in asbestos roofing materials. However, because it was very expensive to transport them from Italy to the United States, Mr. Johns sent out a young scientist to seek a source nearer home. This young man found great vein(岩脉), in the province of Quebec in Canada.
Ever since 1881 Quebec has led the world in the production of this unusual mineral, which is made up of magnesium, silicon, iron, and oxygen. When it is mined, the asbestos is heavy, just as you would expect a mineral to be. When it is separated, a strange thing happens ;the rock breaks down into fine, soft, soapy fibers.
Scientists do not know why the rock can be separated easily into threads(线), but they have found thousands of uses for this fireproof material, of the called the “cloth of stone”.
72.The title that best expresses the main idea of this passage is _____.

C.A “Wonder” mineral D. A new roofing material

The great advance in rocket theory 40 years ago showed that liquid-fuel rockets were far superior in every respect to the skyrocket with its weak solid fuel, the only kind of rocket then known. However during the last decade, large solid-fuel rockets with solid fuels about as powerful as liquid fuels have made their appearance, and it is a favorite layperson’s (外行)question to inquire which one is "better". It all depends on the purpose. A liquid-fuel rocket is complicated, but has the advantage that it can be controlled beautifully. The burning of the rocket engine can be stopped completely; it can be re-ignited (点燃) when desired. In addition, the thrust can be made to vary by adjusting the speed of the fuel pumps. A solid-fuel rocket, on the other hand, is rather simple in construction, though hard to build when a really large size is desired. But once you have a solid-fuel rocket, it is ready for action at very short notice. A liquid-fuel rocket has to be fueled first and cannot be held in readiness for very long after it has been fueled. However, once a solid-fuel rocket has been ignited, it will keep burning. It cannot be stopped and re-ignited whenever desired and its thrust cannot be varied. Because a solid-fuel rocket can be kept ready for a long time, most military missiles employ solid fuels, but human-piloted space flight needs the fine adjustments that can only be provided by liquid fuels. It may be added that a liquid-fuel rocket is an expensive device; a large solid-fuel rocket is, by comparison, cheap. But the solid fuel, pound per pound costs about 10 times as much as the liquid fuel. So you have, on the one hand, an expensive rocket with a cheap fuel and on the other hand a comparatively cheap rocket with an expensive fuel.
76. Which of the following is inferred from the passage?
A. Rockets using liquid fuel was not available 40 years ago although researches were being done on the practicability of using liquid fuel in rockets.
B. It was not until the last decade that rockets using solid fuels made their appearance.
C. Complicated rockets using solid fuel have the advantage of flexibility and adjustability that liquid-fuel rockets don't possess.
D. Liquid fuel costs about 10 times as much as the solid fuel costs.
77. Which of the following was NOT mentioned as one of the advantages of liquid-fuel rockets?
A. They are easy to control. B. Their thrust is variable.
C. They are easy to construct. D. Their speed is adjustable.
78. The chief consideration for using liquid fuels in human-piloted space flights is that the rocket ____.
A. is inexpensive to construct B. is capable of carrying heavy cargo
C. is easy to control D. is inexpensive to operate
79. Which of the following statements is true about solid-fuel rockets?
A. They are simple to construct.
B. They can be re-ignited when desired.
C. They can provide fine adjustments in operation.
D. They cost a lot less than liquid-fuel rockets to construct.
