Spring is in the air, so it is time that we should go outside. Here are the three plants (1)         can decorate your home.

Why not grow common white jasmine? You can raise it (2)         either a bush or a vine. Jasmine vines produce (3)        (many) flowers than jasmine bushes, (4)         they need a frame to grow on. If you grow them on a frame over a path, the path will soon have a cover of white, sweet-smelling flowers. Jasmine is not just for tea.

Of course, (5)         you like blossoms, you may choose the Yulan magnolia. These trees can grow to be over 12 metres tall. In early spring, they are covered with white blossoms. With the blossoms (6)        (fall) off, green leaves cover the trees all summer. In autumn, these leaves change to red and orange, making the ground (7)
(litter) with color. The Yulan magnolia is ideal for cool, moist climates.

If you have no idea what to grow, you can plant a golden ball cactus. You can keep it in your house or plant it outside where it can grow to be more than 60 centimetres tall. Much (8)          it prefers the sun, it tolerates temperatures of below zero degrees centigrade.

The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a man with a gun, but a man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 25 years, over 200 incidents are reported (9)        (cause) by electromagnetic interference(电磁干扰). RTCA, an organization which advises aviation (航空) industry, has suggested that all airlines ban such devices from (11)        (use) by passengers during "key" stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone (12)        (far), calling for a total ban during all flights. Nowadays, rules on using these devices are left up to airlines. And although some airlines ban passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are not willing to enforce a total ban, if many passengers want to work during flights.

The difficulty is understanding (13)         electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that the portable devices give off radiation, and each (14)        (affect) those wavelengths(波段) which aircrafts use for communication. But they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not (15)         they have not been able to reproduce(再现)these effects in a laboratory. The fact that aircraft may be in trouble because of the interference raises the risk (16)         some people may use radio systems in order to damage navigation (导航)equipment.

If you are ever lucky to be invited to a formal dinner party in Paris, remember that the French have their own way of doing things, and that even your finest manners may not be “correct” by French custom. For example, if you think showing up without (1)         at the time given on the invitation with gifts of wine and roses, (2)
your hostess on her cooking, laughing heartily at the host’s joke and then (3)         to help the hostess will make you the perfect guest, think again.

Here Madame Nora Chabal, the marketing director of The Ritz Hotel in Paris, explains how works. The first duty of the guest is to respond to the invitation within 48 hours. If an invitation is for eight o’clock, the (4)
guest arrives at 8: 15. Guests who arrive (5)         on time or early are (6)         ones who are not giving the hostess those last few minutes she needs to deal with details. The “guest” arrives between 15 to 20 minutes after the hour because dinner will be served exactly 30 minutes past the time on the invitation.

Flowers sent in advance are the (7)         gift. They may also be sent afterwards with a thank-you note. It is considered a very bad form to arrive with a gift of flowers in hand, there by forcing the hostess to deal with finding a vase when she is too busy to do that. See, that's the logic! The type of flowers sent has a (8)          of its own, too. One must never send chrysanthemums because they are considered too (9)         a flower for occasion. Carnations are considered bad luck. And though the French love wine, you must never bring a bottle to a dinner party. Why, it's as if you (10)         your hosts would not have enough wine on land, and that's an insult. You may, however, offer a box of chocolates which the hostess will pass after dinner with coffee.

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect the American society in many ways---education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society---one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.

A person's age no longer tells you anything about his or her social position, marriage or health. There is no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that keeps us on time and tells us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, “I am much younger than my father---or my father---was at my age. "No one says “Act your age" any more. We have stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

  1. It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America______.

  1. has made people feel younger

  2. has changed people's social position

  3. has changed people's understanding of age

  4. has slowed down the country's social development

  1. The underlined word “one” refers to______.

  1. a society      B. America       C. a place       D. Population

  1. "Act you age" means people should_______.

    A. be active when they are old

    B. do the right thing at the right age

    C. show respect for their parents young or old

    D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

    【答案】1. C  2. A   3.B

    【解析】

    1. 综合理解题。由第一段”The aging of the population will affect the American society in many ways”和第二段”Public ideas are changing.可知答案为C.

The detective enters the train compartment(包间) and finds the body. Murder! There are multiple wounds but no sign of a struggle. He examines the broken pocket watch. It shows the time: 1:30. He spots something on the floor-- an empty glass. He sniffs() it and makes a face. Ah-ha! He has found clues, but who has done it? The detective in question is the legendary Belgian detective: Hercule Poirot--there is no one better to solve the case!

This autumn sees another remake of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express released in cinemas. Poirot, with his sleek moustache and sophisticated manners, still enthralls us 100 years after Christie gave him life. Young people today clearly admire clever detective work. But why does “posh(上流社会的)” period crime continue to thrill readers and cinema- goers? Why does Agatha Christie, the “queen of crime fiction, ” still dominate the genre with 66 titles to her name? A mystery, perhaps, but let us examine the evidence. She has left us clues.

Three aspects of her writing will strike you: She describes people and places in great detail, her characters speak for themselves, and she lays bare the process of deduction (推理). Murder on the Orient Express is a triumph of writing style, character development and criminal investigation. Christie lets us see what Poirot sees, faithfully records what characters say and allows us to get inside Porot’s brilliant mind.

Paranoia(偏执狂) forced many rich people to travel under false identities. A missing button or the wrong accent might blow their cover and reveal their dark secrets. These look like glamorous (有魅力的) folk, but each has a shady past. As the suspects are interviewed, the reader learns their dark secrets. They lie, of course, but Poirot slowly forces them to reveal "their fractured (有裂缝的)) souls. We see him gather the evidence and explore their web of lies --using his powers of forensic science(法医学), logic and psychology. Poirot too is in danger as he gets closer to the truth.

Like Sherlock Holmes before him, with just his toolkit and great mind, Poirot teaches us about evidence and deduction. Finally, after a roller coaster ride of thrills and spills(紧张刺激)he solves the crime and can point his finger: It was…This is detective fiction at its best --- Christie puts the reader center-stage. We are on our toes---each of our senses is alert!

All aboard, ladies and gentlemen! Tickets, please! Ding, ding. Chuff, chuff. It seems as if crime fiction is still worth investigating. Pack your bags because Agatha Christie is going to take you on a journey.

We have been putting smart women on the couch for 40 years without making full use of their talent. Today the portion of top jobs that go to women is still shockingly low. Why aren’t more women running things in America? It isn’t for lack of ambition or qualifications.    1   Today’s top jobs in major organizations demand 60-plus hours of work a week. Isn’t it too much?

But for businesses and reformers are serious about making their companies hopeful for the large number of American talented womenhere are three ways to handle it.

Re-think time. We can break away from the belief that high-level work can be done only by people who work extra time.     2     Senior roles should actually be easier to adapt in this way because highly paid people have the desire to give up some income in order to work less.

Availability matters. It’s important to differ between availability and absolute time commitment. Many professional women would happily agree to check email seven days a week and come to office, if necessary, for intense project — so long as over the course of a year the time devoted to work is more limited. Managers need to know that 24/7 availability is not the same thing as a 24/7 workload.

3    Leaders need to create a culture in which talented people are judged not by the quantity of their work but by the quality of their contributions. One who works 20 hours a week and who delivers exceptional results on a pro rata(摊派)basis should be qualified for promotions and viewed as a top performer.

“Devotion” may help talented women who can live with the way that top jobs get done presently.    4     Until the rest of us get serious about altering the present way that work gets done in American corporations, we can only complain about the injustice of it all while changing almost nothing.

    【答案】1. B   2. C   3. A   4. D

    【解析】

1.由其后一句“Today’s top jobs in major organizations demand 60-plus hours of work a week. Isn’t it too much?”与选项Bthe difficult issue of time commitment”可知选B

    2.由前一句话可知,选项C符合。

3.由后一句“not by the quantity of their work but by the quality of their contributions.”可知选项A符合。

4.前一句说devotion”可能有帮助,后一句又说直到我们剩下的人严肃对待“altering the present way that work gets done”,我们才可以抱怨这些不公,故选项D符合。
