The old-fashioned general store is fast disappearing. This isl perhaps, a pity, because

shopping today seems to lack that personal element which existed when the shopkeeper

knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand

of tea Mrs. Smith usually bought or what sort of washing powder Mrs. Jones preferred.

Not only was the shop a center of buying and selling, but a social meeting place, A

prosperous general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so there were

very few problems in management as far as the staff were concerned. But now that the

supermarket has replaced the general store, the job of the manager has changed

completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a

hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems in running a large business. Every

morning the manager must, like the commander (司令营) in an army division, carry out an

inspection of his store to make sure that everything is ready for the business of the day. He

must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make

decisions as problems ariseand he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently

with their respective responsibilities. No matter what he has to do throughout the day,

however, the supermarket manager must ready for any emergency that may arise. They

say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have

dealt with a flood, a fire, birth and a death in your store.

      66. The main purpose of the passage is to show

It was a cold night in Washington, D. C. and I was heading back to the hotel when a

man approached me. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something

to eat. 1)d read the signs "Don't give money to beggars as most of them are swindlers."So

I shook my head and kept walking.

I wasn’t prepared for a reply, but with no hesitation, he followed me and said, "1

really am homeless and 1 really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!"But

    I kept on walking.

the incident kept bothering me for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and

it wouldn't have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he hadn't been a real

beggar. On a freezing cold night, no less, I assumed the worst of a fellow human being.

Flying back to Anchorage, I couldn't help thinking of him. I tried to reason my failure

to help by supposing government agencies, churches and charities were there to feed him.

Besides, you're not supposed to give money to beggars.

Somewhere over Seattle, I started to write my weekly garden column for The

Anchorage Daily News. Out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean's Cafe, a local

charity service kitchen, feeds hundreds of hungry local people every day. Why not try to

get all my readers to plant one row of vegetables or flowers in their gardens for Bean's?

plant a Row for Bean's. It's clean and simple.

We didn't keep records back then, but the idea began to take off. Folks would fax me

or call when they took something in. It's food for the spirit and comfort for my conscience.

In Apri11995, the Garden Writers Association of America (GWAA) held their annual

meeting in Anchorage and after learning out program, Plant a row Tor Bean’s became

plant a Row For The Hungry. The idea then was to have every member write or talk about

planting a row for the hungry, which brought the program to national attention.

As more and more people participated, new variations cropped up. Many companies

gave free seeds to customers and displayed the logo for the program. Donations poured in.

It was then that I could really stop feeling guilty.

    C. Because he believed that no people begged because of real hunger.

    D. because he thought that charity (慈善) work was the governments duty.

(   ) 72. How did the author make up for what he had done?

    A. He set up a local kitchen to help the poor.

    B. He planted a row of vegetables for charity.

    D. He initiated the idea of Plant a row Tor Bean's.

Section C

Directions : Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the

statements in the fewest possible words.

For anyone who is determined to be a fashion designer, it is not enough to have succeeded in college. The real test is whether they can survive, and become established(建立) during their early 2os, making a name for themselves in the real world where business skills can be as important as creativity.

Fashion is a hard business. There is a continuous amount of stress because work is at a constant and extremely fast speed to prepare for the next season ) s collections. It is

extremely competitive and there is the constant need to make attractive advertisements of the latest fashion in newspapers and magazines.

It also requires continual freshness because the appetite for new ideas is hard to satisfy."We try 1o warn people before they come to us about how tough it is."says Lydia Kemeny. The Head of Fashion at St. Martin's School of Art in London. "And we point out that drive and determination are absolutely necessary."

This may seem far removed from the popular opinions of fashionable young people

spending their time designing pretty dresses. That may well be what they do in their first year of study but a good college won't be slow in introducing students to commercial(商业的)

realities". We don't walk our foot on the blossoming flower of creativity but in the second year we start introducing the restrictions (限制) of price, producing ability, marketing and so on"

Almost all fashion design is done to a brief. It is not a form of self-expression as such,

although there is certainly room for imagination and creativity. Most young d signers are going to end up as employees of a producer or a fashion house and they still need to be able to work within the employers) characteristic style. Even those who are most modern in their own taste of clothes may need to produce designs which are right for the mainstream.
