On a trip to California, my family stopped for lunch. As we walked towards the entrance to the restaurant, a man, with a messy beard and dirty hair, jumped up from a bench outside the restaurant and opened the door for us and greeted us in a friendly way.
When we went inside,my daughters whispered, “Mom,he smells.”After we ordered our lunch,I explained, telling the kids to look beyond the dirt. We then watched other customers approach the restaurant but many ignored him. Seeing this rudeness truly upset me. The day I became a mother,I had determined to set a good example to my children. Yet sometimes when things didn’t go right, being a good example wasn’t easy sometimes . When our meal arrived,I realized I had left my purse in the car. So I went to get it.
Just then, the “doorman” was opening the door for a couple. They rushed past him without even looking at him. Letting them in first,I said a loud “thank you” to him as I came out. When I returned,we talked a bit. He said he was not allowed inside unless he ordered some food. I went back to my seat and asked our waitress to add one soup and a sandwich. The kids looked puzzled as we had already eaten, but when I said the order was for the “doorman”,they smiled
When it was time to continue our trip, I found the “doorman” enjoying his meal. Upon seeing me, he stood up and thanked me heartily. Then he reached out his hand for a handshake and I gratefully accepted. I suddenly noticed the tears in his eyes—tears of gratitude. What happened next drew great astonishment:I gave the “doorman” a hug. He pulled away, with tears rolling down his face.
Back into our car,I fell into deep thought. While we can’t choose many things in life,we can choose when to show gratitude. I said thanks to a man who had simply opened a door for me,and also said thanks for that opportunity to teach my children by example.

Once there was an unknown young painter who made a living by painting portraits (pictures of a person). One day, a rich man came by and asked him to draw a portrait. They agreed on the pay of 10,000 dollars.
Soon the portrait was done. But the rich man hit on a bad idea, “The man in the painting is me. If I don’t buy this painting, no one else will. Why should I pay so much money for it?” So he said, “I will only pay 3,000 dollars.”
The young artist was shocked and strongly argued on fairness. But the rich man just didn’t listen to him, “I ask you at last, will you sell it for 3,000 dollars or not?”
The young artist knew the rich man went back on his word on purpose, so he said calmly,“No, I’d prefer not to sell the painting rather than be humiliated by you. Today you break your word and someday you must pay 20 times, we’d better wait and see.”
Before long the painter moved out of this sad place, visiting many famous teachers to study hard on painting night and day.
About twenty years passed, the rich man had already forgotten the artist’s painting and words. Until one day, some of his friends came to tell him, “Something is so strange! We paid a visit to a famous artist’s exhibition of paintings, in which one painting is marked 200,000 dollars and the man in the painting looks exactly the same as you. It is so ridiculous that the title of the painting is Thief.”
It was a terrible blow to him. He immediately thought up the young painter years ago. If the painting was really the one he broke his promise that year, it would be terrible. He went to the exhibition right away. As we expected, the painting named Thief was no other than one on which he had broken his word that year. He quickly apologized to the artist and paid 200,000 dollars to buy back the portrait.
The young painter finally made the rich man lower his head. Nobody can really humiliate or beat you as long as you put all your heart in what you are interested in. And this young man’s name, was Pablo Picasso.
