Monkeys are very smart animals. In fact, some of them even go to college! The monkeys in Thailand are sent to the training school by farmers to learn an important job: how to pick fruits from tall trees. The trainer says it takes a few months. For the first month, he just lets the monkey play. He shows the monkey how to take the fruit from a box. Then the trainer uses a rope to control the monkey’s work. When the trainer pulls the rope, the monkey goes faster. Later, he brings the monkey to a tree and lets him learn how to pick the fruits from the tree. Monkeys have helped the farmers to pick fruits for more than a hundred years. If people climb up those trees, they may fall and die. Many farmers say they couldn’t earn the money without help from their monkeys. They are so valuable that farmers never leave them home alone. Mr. Lee’s three-year-old monkey assists with his work. Mr. Lee also lends the monkey to other farmers to earn extra money. He usually ties the monkey to a fruit tree near the house and gives rice to it. The monkey can live to be 13 years old. So, he has ten more years that he can work.
