2023年高中英语牛津上海版高中三年级第一字期阅读专项练习(十三)(有答案)

(A)

Everyone Will Get Old

Until late in the 20th century, most Americans spent time with people of old generations. Now mid-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves.

That's because we group people by age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-care center, our 13-year-olds in school and sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior-citizen homes. Why?

We live away from the old for many reasons: young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears for aging (衰老) and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it's so hard that we stay away from the people who need us most.

Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old. And we have discovered that they often save the young.

A reporter moved her family onto a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbors and had her children deliver it and visit them. Soon the children had many new friends, with whom thev shared food, stories and project. "My children have never been less lonely," the reporter said.

The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was in a rest home when a visitor showed up with a baby. She was immediately surrounded. People who hadn't gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had seemed asleep wake up to watch the child. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.

Grandparents are a special case. They give grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it, "my grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end."

Grandchildren speak of attention they don't get from worried parents. "My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down," one friend said. A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer, more trusting.

The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is in San Francisco. The bridge crosses part of a bay and leads to roads going north. Until 1937, there was no bridge at this place. The only way across was by ferry boat. The space seemed too big for a bridge. But one man, Joseph Strauss had always wanted to build a bridge there. Finally, he got his way.

Joseph Strauss drew up plans for the new bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge would be a suspension bridge (悬索桥). The roadway would hang from giant cables—thick ropes of steel. At each end of the bridge, huge towers would hold up the cables.

Work on the bridge began in 1933 and went on for four years. Workmen climbed hundreds of feet above the icy water. A net was stretched under the bridge to catch any workers who might fall. Some did fall into the net and were rescued.

Joseph Strauss's dream came true on May 28,1937, at a cost of $ 35 million. Long lines of cars crossed the bridge for the first time on that day.

The Golden Gate Bridge was one of the largest and most magmficent suspension bridges in the world of that time.   It spans a channel at the entrance of San Francisco Bay.  The bridge, which has a total  length of 8,981 feet (2,737meters), connects northern California to peninsula (半岛) of San Francisco.

Its towers are among the first buildings seen from ships coming near San Francisco. These towers stand on either side of the bridge, about 1,125 feet (343 meters) from the ends. They hold up the two steel cables 36 inches (93 centimeters) in diameter, from which the bridge hangs. The part between the towers is 4,200 feet (1,280 centimetres) long, one of the world's longest spans. The floor is about 200 feet ( 67 meters ) above the water, and 90 feet (27 meters) wide. It has a six-lane road and sidewalks.

                              C

Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A—F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A. Officials supported the idea

B. The reason why some cyber cafes were opened

C. Who put the idea into practice?

D. Some cyber cafes have been opened in high schools

E. Who suggested the idea?

F. What can students do in the cyber cafe?

1.

Cyber Cafe computer centers are found in many cities around the world. Now, a few American high schools are opening these centers. For example, a high school in the state of Maryland began operating a Cyber Cafe last March. All students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda can use the Cyber Cafe.

2.

School officials say it especially helps students who have no computer or cannot use the Internet at home.  The officials say 13 percent of the students at the school are from poor families. Many students have arrived in the United States from other countries only recently. Students in the school's program for learning English speak 23 other languages.

3.

The idea for a Cyber Cafe at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School began three years ago.

At that time, officials were planning to restore the school building. Parents interested in technology proposed a Cyber Cafe even though schools in the area had suffered budget cuts, so that all students would have the best chances to learn.

4.

Officials in the area supported the idea. So did an organization called the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Educational Foundation. The foundation includes parents, teachers, former students, and business community and other leaders. Over two years, the foundation collected money for a Cyber Cafe and other new computers. It received more than $170,000.

5.

The Cafe now has 16 computers, a printer and a scanner. School official Ann Hengerer says students use the Internet to complete research. They also write homework and required papers on the computers. In addition, they can send and receive electronic mail. That is especially helpful for the many students who have family members in other nations. The Cyber Cafe also serves a social purpose. Visitors can stop by for a drink of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Dieting

Read the following passage and choose the most suitable heading from this list for each paragraph of the passage. Note that there is one extra heading.

A. Being on a diet is a torture (折磨)

B. I feel better with vegetarian food

C. I lost weight after dieting

D. I began dieting for the sake of health

E. Dieting simply causes endless worries

F. Dieting does more harm than good to one's health

6.

You can always recognize dieters from the sour expression on their faces. They spend most of their time turning their noses up at food. They are forever consulting calorie charts, gazing at themselves in mirrors, and leaping on to weighing-machines in the bathroom. They spend a lifetime fighting a losing battle against spreading hips, big bellies and double chins. How miserable dieters are!

7.

I began making some dietary and lifestyle changes during my second year of college and have been eating this way ever since. I like the way I feel when I don't eat animal foods so much more than the pleasure I used to get from eating them. I have much more energy; I need less sleep; I feel calmer; I can maintain an ideal body weight without worrying about how much I eat, and I can think more clearly.

8.

During my first year of college, I gained forty pounds when I began throwing the javelin (

). For the next twenty years, I carried all of this extra weight and kidded myself that I was in good shape since that's what I weighed in college. Now that I've lost all that extra weight, I feel great! People say all the time, "Well, how do you live without eating cheeseburgers or this or that?" And I say, "You just don't. It's not even an option. It's not that hard once you get on it. "

9.

All the horrible things you eat instead of food leave you permanently dissatisfied. A complete food it may be, but not quite as complete as juicy steak. So at least three times a day you will be exposed to temptation. How miserable to watch others tucking into piles of mouth-watering food while you eat a water biscuit (薄脆饼干) and sip unsweetened lemon juice! And if hunger just proves too much for you, in the end you will devour (狼吞虎

) five huge guilt-inducing cream cakes at a sitting (一口气). Then things will turn out to be even worse.

10.

I went on diet when my doctor told me that my blood pressure tended to be high. Only at that time did I realize the danger of being overweight. Since I began making dietary changes in 1982, eating this way has become increasingly accepted. I don't feel I've lost something after dieting. Instead, I've got something valuable. That is good health.
