There must be some mistakes! Thats what Tamar Chotzen said when she learned that the United Nations had given her its highest environmental award for her work at the Hawaii Nature Center.

But there was no mistake. The United Nations gave its Environmental Leadership Award in 1993 to Chotzen . Other winners were such famous people as Carl Sagan and Margaret Mead.

In her seven years as the head of the Hawaii Nature Center. Chotzen has built a wonderful place where young children can learn about the environment . The programs at the Nature Center allow the children to not only see but touch the forest.

When children leave the Nature Center .  Chotzen wants them to see how their lives are linked, or connected, to the environment. She says, When the children see where their food and water come from, then I feel very good about my work.

I think the challenge for us is to be more self-aware, says Chotzen. Thats partly what we are teaching children here at the Nature Center ----to be aware of themselves and their relationships to the environment, to understand the effects that they are having so that nature is not forgotten.

So when children ask if there are sharks in the river at the Nature Center, Chotzen hopes that, after they leave, they will remember that sharks live in the ocean and that the river is a place where drinking water come from.

Chotzen, 37 years old, began to work for the Nature Center by accident. She was hurt while playing soccer, and stared to look for a job. Chotzen saw the Nature Centers ad for a director, but she did not know anything about the Nature Center. After a visit, she was very excited. It was like a flower just waiting to bloom.

Chotzen has indeed helped the nature Center also to bloom. When she began her work in 1986, about 6000 people visited the Honolulu center. It had a budget of 50000. Today, over 50000 people visit it and the other center on Maui. The budget is now over 1,000,000. Her goal is to have all the young children in Hawaii visit in the two centers.

1 Why did the United Nations give its Environment Leadership Award in 1993 to Chotzen?

2 What did Chotzen do as the head of Hawaii Nature Center?

3How old was Chotzen when she began to work for the Nature Center?

4 Did she know about the Nature Center before she began to work there?

5 How many people visited the Center in 1986?

6 Where are the two centers?

7 What do you think of Chotzens  work ?
