III. Choose the answer that fits best according to the information given in the passage.

The key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. First, it is essential that people understand the potential(潜在的) problems of cross-cultural communication, and make a conscious effort to overcome these problems. Second, it is important to know that one’s efforts will not always be successful, and change one’s behavior appropriately.

For example, one should always assume that there is a significant possibility that cultural differences are causing communication problems, and be willing to be patient forgiving, rather than hostile(敌对的) and offensive, if problems develop. One should respond slowly and carefully in cross-cultural exchanges, not jumping to the conclusion that you know what is being thought and said.

William Ury’s suggestion for heated conflicts(矛盾,冲突) is to stop, listen, and think, or as he puts it “go to the balcony(阳台)” when the situation gets tense. By this he means withdraw(撤退) from the situation, step back, and think about what is going on before you act. What could be going on here? Is it possible I misunderstand what they said, or they misinterpreted me? Often misinterpretation is the source of the problem.

Often intermediaries who are familiar with both cultures can be helpful in cross-cultural communication situations. They can translate both the substance and the manner of what is said. For instance, they can tone down strong statements that would be considered appropriate in one culture but not in another, before they are given to people from a culture that does not talk together in such a strong way. They can also adjust the timing of what is said and done. Some cultures move quickly to the point; others talk about other things long enough to establish a close relationship with the other person.

(      ) 1. The passage mainly talks about _________.

  1. the potential cross-cultural communication problems

  2. how to make effective cross-cultural communication

  3. how to avoid cross-cultural communication problems

  4. the importance of knowledge about another culture

  2. get some sunlight and fresh air in the balcony

  3. think of a way to join in the communication in the balcony

  4. step out of the communication and calm oneself down

(      ) 3. An “intermediary” in the last paragraph refers to a person who _______.

  1. acts as a go-between during cross-cultural communication

  2. acts as a translator during cross-cultural communication

  3. keeps the cross-cultural communication going

  4. can help people from different cultures reach an agreement

(      ) 4. We ca infer from the passage that _______.

  1. different cultures may have different timing of what is said and done

  2. our active efforts can overcome all cross-cultural communication problems

  3. one cannot have cross-cultural communication without overcoming problems

  4. misunderstanding is the source of all cross-cultural communication problems

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines; a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job advancing, the ability to read and comprehend _____1____ can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are ____2___ readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never ____3_____ them. The main shortage lies in the actual stuff of language itself----words. Taken individually(个别地), words have little _____4____ until they are bound together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, ____5_____, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously(费力地) reads one word at a time, often regressing to ____6_____ words or passages. Regression, the tendency to look back over what you have just read, is a common ____7_____ habit in reading. Another habit which ______8_____ the speed of reading is vocalization(发音)—sounding each word either _____9_____ or mentally as one reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an accelerator(加速器) , which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly ____10____rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “____11____” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and sub-vocalization, practically _____12_____. At first comprehension is _____13______ speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skill ____14______ improved after some training. Take Charles Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute before training, now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute.      Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Take my family’s last vacation. It was my six-year-old son’s winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had meeting in New YorkSo I had to get back . But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took off for home.
The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged--okay, ordered them to wait it out at the airport, to "earn" more Delta dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?
Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.
I've made living looking for the best deals and exposing (揭露) the worst tricks . I have been the consumer reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.

I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape .longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.
(      )56. Why did Delta give the author's family credits?
        A. They took a later flight.
        B. They had early bookings.
        C. Their flight had been delayed.
      D. Their flight had been cancelled.
(      )57. What can we learn about the author?
      A. She rarely misses a good deal.
      B. She seldom makes a compromise.
      C. She is very strict with her children
      D. She is interested in cheap products.
(      )58. What does the author do?
      A. She's a teacher.
      B. She's a housewife.
      C. She's a media person.
      D. She's a businesswoman.

(      )59. What does the author want to tell us?
A. How to expose bad tricks.
B. How to reserve airline seats.
C. How to spend money wisely,
D. How to make a business deal
