Everyone needs friendship. No one can sail the ocean of like single-handed. We need help from and also give help to others. In the modern age, people attach (把......附在......上)more importance to relations and connections. The term, friend, covers a wide range of meanings. It can be nodding acquaintance, a comrade(同事,战友), a partner, an intimate, etc. Then, what on earth is friendship? Why do we call a person our friends? If we care for a person, if we are always ready to help that person and if we share most of our thoughts with a person, they are our friends.

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few of them and not all of them are our friends. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together. But beyond that, the degree of intimacy(亲密)between them and the reasons for the shared interests vary enormously. Then what the real friends are like?

Friend id dsomeone who change your life by being part of it, who makes you believe that it really is good in the world, who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it.

When you get into trouble, he will give you a hand. When you gain the achievement, he will come to congratulate you and give you a hug. When you lose your way, he will guide you to march on.

Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common---they often talk about “being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to make friends with favours and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and try to tolerate differences of opinions. Contrasted with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonis to strengthen the association between two persons. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barries of age, class or race.

More than teo million people in Europe now have fiber broadband(光纤宽带)direct to their home, suggests a survey. The latest   1   on superfast broadband delivered by fiber to the home (FTTH) show 18% growth over the last survey compiled(编写)in late 2008.

The continued growth suggests that the   2   economic decline has not hit plans to build fiber networks. Sweden   3   the list of nations applying the technology, with 10.9% of its broadband customers using fiber. Karel Helsen, president of Europe’s Fiber to the Home Council, said the growth matched pedictions that were   4   when the credit crisis started to make itself felt. “The numbers in 2009 are in line with the ;atest forecasts,” said Mr. Helsen.

By 2012, the FTTH Council expects that 13 millipn people across 35 European nations will have their broadband   5   by fiber. Such services would start at a speed of 100 megabits(兆位)per second (mbps), said Mr. Helsen. Around Europe more than 233 projects were underway to lay the fibers that would   6   homes or buildings to the net, said Mr. Helsen. “Many of those”, he said, “were being operated by local governments or smaller net firms”. Local governments were interested in FTTH because of the economic and social   7

it brought in its wake, said Mr. Helsen.

The low delay in high-speed fiber networks made   8   new uses of broadband, he said. “No delay is very important,” he said, “Specially if you talk about   9   that are time-dependent such as personal communications, conference calls or video calls where delays cause a lot of trouble.” While early FTTH services were   10   in cities, said Mr. Helsen, many more were reaching out to rural areas for e-health and e-learning projects.

The Dragon Boat F estival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zongzi and racing dragon boats.

The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. The regatta(赛舟会)commemorates(纪念)the death of Qu Yuan, an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himelf in a river. Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during the Warring States Period. He was honest, loyal and highly respected for his wise suggestions that brought peace and wealth to the state. However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified(诽谤)Qu, he was disgraced and dismissed from office. Realizing that the country was now in the hands of evil and corrupt officals, Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save him but were unable to even recover his body. Thereafter, the state declined and was eventually conquered by the State of Qin.

The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth month. But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and told the mourners that a huge reptile(爬行动物)in the river had stolen the rice. The spirit then advised them to wrap the rice in silk and bind it with five different-colored threads before throwing it into the river.

During the Duanwu Festival, zongzi is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu. Ingredients such as beans, pork fat and the golden yolk of a salted duck egg are often added to the glutinous(粘的)rice. The pudding is then wrapped with bamboo leaves, bound with a kind of raffia(椰叶)and boiled in salt water for hours.

The dragon-boat races symbolize the many attempts to rescue and recover Qu’s body. A typical dragon boat ranges from 50---100 feet in length, with a beam of about 5.5 feet, accommodating two paddlers(划桨者)seated side by side. The races are held among different villages and organizations, and the winners are awarded medals, banners, jugs of wine and festival meals.

Whether you’re learning English as a second language or are a native speaker who’s never had the skill for writing, improving your English composition skills is very important. Knowing your shortcomings and practicing will allow you to write prose that is at first simply grammatically correct, and eventually sparking with style. To achieve this you’ll need to read more, ask friends for heolp, and continually write. Practice does indeed make perfect.

Establish a certain time to practice your writing exercises. It is important to spend as much time as possible doing your writing exercises (at least 4 times a week), so you can become a better writer. Good writers are always writing something new or proofreading(校对)and revising their current writing projrcts. So, decide how much time you can devote to becoming a bteer writer and set s schedule.

Enlarge your vacabulary by reading as much as possible. Look up the definitions of words with which you are not familiar. The more words you can use successfully, the more often yoou’ll be able to find the right one for the task at hand, and the less likely your writing will be simplistic and repetitive.

Vary your sentence structures. Using varied sentence structures gives writing a visual attraction. Simple sentences may be easy to write, but using compound sentences allows you to convey a more complex message. Examine what sentence sturctures you currently use and practice structures that you tend to avoid.

Get feedback(回馈)on your writing so you improve faster. If you are not taking a class, ask someone who writes well to read and correct some of your words. If you ask people regularly, you can greatly improve your written English.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

  1. How can make your writing correct at first and then becomes great in the end?

  2. What can make your writing improve faster?

3.According to the writer, we should spend at least              a week to do your writing exercise.

4.The benefit of using compound sentences is that
