Email has had a good run as king of communications. But its leading position is over. In its place, a new _____41_____ of services is starting to take hold -- services like Twitter and Facebook and countless others vying for a piece of the new world.
Years ago, we were _____42_____ if it took a few days for a letter to arrive. A couple of years ago, we'd complain about a half-hour _____43_____in getting an email. Today, we gripe about it taking an extra few seconds for a text message to _____44_____. In a few months, we may be complaining that our cellphones aren't automatically able to send _____45_____ to friends within a certain distance, letting them know we're nearby. (A number of services already do this.)
These new services also make communicating more frequent and _____46_____ -- more like a blog comment or a throwaway aside, rather than a crafted(精制的)email sent to one person. No need to spend time _____47_____ a long email to your half-dozen closest friends about how your vacation went. Now those friends, if they're interested, can watch it unfold in real time online. _____48_____ sending a few emails a week to a handful of friends, you can send dozens of messages a day to hundreds of people who know you, or just _____49_____ do.
But the _____50_____ and ease of communication cut both ways. While making communication more frequent, they can also make it less _____51_____ and intimate(亲密的). Communicating is becoming so easy that the recipient knows how little time and thought was required of the sender. Yes, your half-dozen closest friends can read your vacation updates. But so can your 500 other 'friends.' And if you know all these people are _____52_____ your updates, you might say a lot less than you would otherwise.
That can make it harder to determine the _____53_____ of various messages. In the new messaging world, you have a higher profile, packed with data you want to share and possibly some you don't. Such a public profile has its pluses and minuses. It can _____54_____ the people communicating closer, allowing them to exchange not only text but also all sorts of personal information, even facial cues. You know a lot about the person you are talking to, even before you've ever _____55_____ a single word.

The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids(金字塔). They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid.
Some of the pyramids still look as much alike as they must have been when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to keep the pyramids in good condition, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important one is that they were planned to last forever.
The “Step” pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile(尼罗河), the side on which the sun set. This was for spiritual reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was , of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base, which was not likely to crack under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, it had to be near the capital, or better still, near king’s palace so that he could visit it easily to personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.
Most of the damage to the pyramids has been caused by _______.
A. stones. B. rivers. C. weather. D. men.
57.According to the passage, the “Step” pyramid_________.
A. Is unlikely to fall into ruin in the future.
B. was built on the stands along the Nile.
C. is the one that was built later than the true pyramids.
D. is the most famous of the true pyramids.
58. The most important reason why some pyramids remain in good condition is that _______.
A. people have taken care of them.
B. it doesn’t rain often in Egypt.
C.they were well designed.
D. The government has protected them from damage.
The Egyptians built the pyramids along the banks of the Nile because __________.
A. they believed in their god.
B. it was difficult to find a large rock base far from the Nile.
C. the river helped a lot in the transport of building materials.
D. it was not easy to choose a suitable place for the pyramids.

The kids in this village wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.
The key to their success: 20 tablet computers(平板电脑) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a U.S. group called One Laptop Per Child.
The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing the project data say they’re already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopia program.
The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The device’s camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment in Ethiopia.
With his tablet, Kelbasa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own. “Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable,” said Keller.
The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading,” where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic, Ethiopia’s first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.
60. How does the Ethiopia program benefit the kids in the village?
A.It trains teachers for them.
B.It contributes to their self-study.
C.It helps raise their living standards.
D.It provides funds for building schools.
61. What can we infer from Keller’s words in Paragraph 3?
A.They need more time to analyze data.
B.More children are needed for the research.
C.He is confident about the future of the project.
D.The research should be carried out in kindergartens.
62. It amazed Keller that with the tablet Kelbesa could _______.
A.learn English words quickly.
B.draw pictures of animals.
C.write letters to researchers.
D.make phone calls to his friends.
63. What is the aim of the project?
A.To offer Ethiopians higher paying jobs.
B.To make Amharic widely used in the world.
C.To help Ethiopian kids read to learn in English.
D.To assist Ethiopians in learning their first language.
