Passage C (6%)
When a person dies, his body decays. Skin and flesh disappear and as time goes by, only a
skeleton is left. A mummy(木乃伊) is the dead body of a person or an animal that has been
preserved by wrapping cloth or other material around it. Mummies have been found all over the
world, and most of them are in Egypt. However, other cultures in South America and Asia also
mummified their dead.
The oldest mummy ever found dates back to ,000 years before Christ. The British Museum in
London currently displays the oldest Egyptian mummy, dating back to 3400 BC. The British
archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the remains of Tutankhamun (图坦卡门) in 1922,
probably the most famous mummy in the world.
Today scientists study mummies with special equipment and X-ray machines. They discover more about the bodies of ancient people and how they lived. They can also find clues to what they ate and what kind of diseases they had.
Mummification also occurs due to extreme weather. Mummies have been found in the old regions of the world, including the Alps and the Himalaya mountains. Salt water also helps preserve(保存) bodies. Mummies have been found in deserts and in peat bogs(泥炭沼). The most famous natural mummies is Otzi, the Iceman, found in a glacier on the Austrian-Italian border in1991.
Egyptian society mummified their dead for many centuries. They believed that they had to preserve the body for life after death. The soul of the dead would be reunited with its body in the afterlife. At first, they started burying dead people in hot sand; later on, they built special tombs. Egyptians wanted their relatives to feel comfortable after death.
Later on, bodies were wrapped in cloth to stop bacteria and other harmful substances from getting to them. A substance called natron was used to cover the bodies. It removed moisture from the skin and flesh. Inner organs, including the brain, were removed; the heart was usually left in the body. Mummies often received a face mask.
Mummies were then put into coffins, made out of wood or stone. Relatives decorated them and buried them under ground. The extracted inner organs were put into jars and placed next to their owners.
Poor people did not have the money for such complicated procedures. Mummifying pharaohs and noblemen, on the other hand, proved to be a special and demanding job. In ancient Egypt, it took 70 days to finish a complete mummification process.
92. Tutankhamun’s remains_____.

Passage E Answer the questions according to the passage (6%)
As an English language teacher I have come into contact with many, many different nationalities. The People I teach English to come from very different backgrounds. I have also been fortunate enough to travel to different countries with my work: the USA, China, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, to name just a few. You might think, then, that I would be well prepared for the challenge of meeting different cultures. 1 think I am quite well prepared, but I have had some interesting and surprising experiences. Here are some of the experiences which have made an impression on me.
Arab culture
When some Saudi Arabian students invited me to their house for a meal, we sat on the floor to eat. When I complimented an Omani(阿曼苏丹国) student on his smart coat, he offered it to me! It seems that is the expected response in some parts of the Arab World.
When I asked a Saudi student when his birthday was, he said he didn't know. I kept asking him the same question thinking he didn't understand, but the problem was that they don't celebrate birthdays in some parts of the Arab world.
Japanese culture
When I was invited for a meal by some Japanese students I was surprised that I had to take my shoes off before going into the house. I was even more surprised when I had to sing karaoke!
I have noticed that when I ask Japanese students a question, they often don't say anything in response until they have the answer. The silence is longer than we expect in English culture, where you normally make some kind of noise to show you have understood the question and you are thinking about it.
German culture
At first German students talked to me very formally, calling me"Mister Jones and using the polite form of 'you' . (In German and other European languages there are two forms of the pronoun ' you', one for people you know well and another for people you don't know so well, or people who are older or have a higher status than you)
I was surprised that German people thought it was OK to ask you how much you earn. We would only do that with people we know very well in England.
Chinese culture
We had a group of Chinese teachers here. They made their tea in their cups. Boiling water was added to the same leaves when they wanted another cup of tea. I found this interesting because we make our tea in a teapot, using boiling water. But new leaves or teabags are used every time we want another pot of tea. We drink it black or milk and sugar can be added to the tea, depending on personal preference.
I don't think the cultural differences I have experienced have caused any real
problems. They just make life interesting.
