Section A
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with one proper word or the proper form of the given word to make the passage coherent. Make sure that your answers are grammatically correct.
Have you ever seen an old movie called Three Coins in the Fountain? It is about three young American women (1) (search) for permanent romance in Rome and they all find it. Far-fetched Hollywood? Well, from the world history point of view, romance did, in fact, set down its roots in Rome.
The word romance evolved in Latin from Roma to Romanicus of the Roman language, to the Old French romanz escrive, (2) means “to write in a Romance language,” and on to the English romance.
The Romance languages (3) (compose) of seven groups of languages that all have Latin (4) their basis. These languages include French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. The common people in ancient Rome spoke (5) is referred to as Vulgar Latin, an informal speech, as opposed to the classical Latin of the more educated. Most language experts agree that Vulgar Latin is the chief source of the Romance languages.
Medieval Romances were tales (6)________(write) primary in French verse about brave heroes. The notion of having a romance with another person is thought (7) (develop) sometime during the Middle Ages. In the late 8th century and on through the 19th, a romance was not a love story (8) a work of prose fiction that contained far-fetched, mysterious events. Romances of this period (9) (include) English Gothic novels like The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole.
What exactly is a twentieth-century romance? Does it have any relationship with the lively, popular novels written today, with their fantastic plots of love affairs? Or did the playwright Oscar Wilde have it right in The Picture of Dorian Gray:”When one is in love, one always begins by deceiving (10) and one always ends by deceiving others. That is what the world calls a romance.”

Dear Editor,
Most public libraries now offer all visitors, kids and adults alike, free access to all sites on the Internet. In 2000, there were 7.1 million publicly(4) sites on the Web, with over 200 new adult sites added each day. Couple this figure with the fact that there are(5) 200 million American children under the age 18with Internet access, and you have a recipe for disaster.
Back in 1967, the American Library Association (ALA) passed a resolution (决议) that stated “a person’s right to use a library should not be(6) ... because of origin, age, background, or views.” Some groups argue that this resolution gives children the right to free and total access to the Internet and its unsuitable sites.
This resolution was fine in the past, but it never considered the(7) of the Internet. Besides, the ALA isn’t a government agency. It has no power to pass laws, and its resolutions are not(8) binding(有约束力的).
We must pass real laws that(9) U.S. government funds for library computers to the use of software that(10) out offensive material online. If the libraries don’t use the software, then they don’t get computers.
As a working parent, I can’t be with my child every time he turns on the computer. I don’t expect libraries to be babysitters. But I do expect them to work with me, not against me, in making sure my child is protected from adult-only and other irresponsible sites.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Twenty years ago, most experts believed that differences in how boys and girls behaved were mainly due to differences in how they were treated by their parents, teachers, and friends. It’s hard to cling to that belief today. Recent research has shown that there are biological differences between boys and girls. Understanding these differences is important in raising and educating children.
For example, girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, and the difference increases as kids grow up. So when a grown man speaks to a girl in what he thinks is a normal voice, she may hear it as yelling. Conversely (反过来), boys who appear to be inattentive in class may just be sitting too far away too hear the teacher.
Likewise, girls are better in their expression of feelings. Studies reveal that negative emotions are seated in an area of the brain called the amygdale (杏仁核). Compared with boys, girls develop an earlier connection between this area and the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), enabling them to talk about their feelings. But if you ask a troubled adolescent boy to tell you what his feelings are, he often cannot say much.
Dr. Sax, an advocate of single-sex education, points out that keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom has yielded striking educational, social, and interpersonal benefits. Therefore, parents and teachers should try to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy.
1. What does the underlined phrase “cling to” in the first paragraph mean?
A. To maintain
B. To abandon
C. To prove
D. To challenge
2. Why do girls express negative feelings better than boys?
A. Girls are more emotional than boys.
B. Girls have more brain cells than boys.
C. The amygdala is located in different areas of the brain for boys and girls.
D. The links between certain parts of the brain develop earlier in girls than in boys.
3. Which of the following does the author believe?
A. Girls need more training in communication.
B. Boys and girls should be educated in different ways.
C. Parents should pay more attention to boys.
D. Sex differences should be ignored in education.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Boys tend to pay less attention in class than girls.
B. Girls are better than boys in their ability to detect sounds.
C. Boys and girls behave differently because of biological differences.
D. Single-sex schools are not good because they keep boys and girls separate.
A 2. D 3. B 4. C
It’s hard to cling to that belief today的意思是“今天很难再坚持这个想法”,故推测cling to的意思是坚持、保持,本题正确答案为A。
Compared with boys, girls develop an earlier connection between this area and the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), enabling them to talk about their feelings.
Dr. Sax, an advocate of single-sex education, points out that keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom…… Therefore, parents and teachers should try to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy.
(B)

A. a newspaper
B. a travel guide
C. a graduation essay
D. a university document
2. Which of the following is true about King's College Summer School?
A. Only top students can take part in the program.

3. If you are to live with your relatives in New York, you will have to pay the school _____.
A. $200
B. $400
C. $500
D. $900
King's College Summer School is an annual (每年的) training program for high school students at all levels who want to improve their English可知这个项目是每年一次而不是每两年一次,而且不是只有最优秀的学生才能参加这个项目,故A、B错;由第一段第二句话Courses are given by the teachers of King' s College and other colleges in New York可知不是只有这个学校的老师上课,故D错;所以答案选择C。
(C)
Like most people, I’ve long understood that I’ll be judged by my occupation, that my profession is used by people to see how talented I am. Recently, however, I was disappointed to see that it also decides how I’m treated as a person.
Last year I left a professional position as a small-town reporter and took a job waiting tables. As someone paid to serve food to people, I had customers say and do things to me I suppose they’d never say or do to the people they know. One night a man talking on his cell phone waved me away, then called me back with his finger a minute later, saying angrily that he was ready to order and asking where I’d been.
I had waited tables during summers in college and was treated like a peon(勤杂工) by plenty of people. But at 19 years old, I believed I deserved inferior(低等的)treatment from professional adults. Besides, people responded to me differently after I told them I was in college. Customers would joke that one day I’d be sitting at their table, waiting to be served.
Once I graduated I took a job at a community newspaper. From my first day, I heard a respectful tone from everyone who called me. I assumed this was the way the professional world worked--- politely and formally.
I soon found out differently. I sat several feet away from a person in advertising department with a similar name. Our calls would often get mixed up and someone asking for Kristen would be transferred to Christie. The mistake was immediately clear. Perhaps it was because of money, but people used a tone with Kristen that they never used with me.
It’s no secret that there’s a lot to put up with when waiting tables, and fortunately, much of it can be easily forgotten when you pocket the tips. The service industry exists to meet others’ needs. Still, it seemed that many of my customers didn’t get the difference between server and servant.
I’m now applying to graduate school, which means someday I’ll return to a profession where people need to be nice to me in order to get what they want. I think I’ll take them to dinner first, and see how they treat someone whose job is to serve them.
1. What makes the author disappointed?
A. Professionals tend to look down upon workers.
B. Talented people have to do the job waiting tables.
C. One’s position is used to measure one’s intelligence.
D. Occupation affects the way one is treated as a person.
2. What does the author intend to say by the example in Paragraph 2?
A. Waiting tables is a hard job.
B. Some customers are difficult to deal with.
C. The man making a phone call is absent-minded.
D. Some customers show no respect to those who serve them.
3. How did the author feel when waiting tables at the age of 19?
A. She felt it unfair to be treated as a servant.
B. She found it natural for professionals to treat her as inferior.
C. She was embarrassed each time her customers joked with her.
D. She felt badly hurt when her customers regarded her as a peon.
4. The author says one day she’ll take her customers to dinner in order to _______.
A. see what kind of person they are
B. experience the feeling of being served
C. share her working experience with her customers
D. help them realize the difference between server and servant
【答案】1.D 2. D 3.B 4. A
Recently, however, I was disappointed to see that it also decide show I’m treated as a person.
But at 19 years old, I believed I deserved inferior treatment from professional adults可知作者19岁时在饭店当招待员,不被顾客尊重,她对此的看法是“deserved inferior treatment”,即“比别人低人一等是理所应当的”,换句话说,作者认为这是十分自然的,即选项B所述的“natural”。
I’ll take them to dinner first, and see how they treat someone whose only job is to serve them可知对于有求于她的人,作者会先带他去吃饭,看看他是如何对待那些为他们提供服务的人。
Section C(4*2=8分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. Stick to your plan. B. We set unrealistic goals or standards for ourselves. C. Also, take time to reward yourself for achieving a goal. D. Organize your workday. E. Five Ways to Work Smarter, Not Harder
No matter how hard we work, it seems that there is never enough time to get all the important tasks done. Rather than working longer, consider working smarter, not harder. Here are some ways to work smarter:
Make a careful plan. Just like every organization needs a business plan, an efficient worker needs a work plan.____1____Schedule your tasks throughout the days, weeks, and months, but do it ahead of time.
Set your goals. As a part of your work plan, you should set clear and measurable goals. Goals should state which tasks are to be completed and when they get completed. Rather than setting firm deadlines, which can lead to pressure and stress, allow a period of time to reach goals. Also, take time to reward yourself for achieving a goal.
____2____Develop a consistent daily work schedule and stick to it! If a typical workday consists of some writing tasks(emails, reports), one-on-one meetings, and processing data, set aside specific time each day to accomplish each kind of tasks.
Delegate(授权)effectively.____3____The person who tries to do everything himself or herself not only is overloaded and over stressed, but is bad for their colleagues, by not allowing them to be challenged and grow by taking on important duties.
Don’t make work harder than it actually is. Much of the pressure is produced by ourselves.____4______We feel like we should do more. Remember that tasks should be completed step by step. Focus on each step rather than on the entire project, which can help us cut down on feelings that we are “overwhelmed”.
Make a careful plan. Just like every organization needs a business plan, an efficient worker needs a work plan制定一个周密的计划,就像每个组织都需要一个商业计划一样,一个有效率的员工需要一个工作计划。
If a typical workday consists of some writing tasks(emails, reports), one-on-one meetings, and processing data, set aside specific time each day to accomplish each kind of tasks可知,如果是一个典型的工作日,每天留出特定的时间来完成各种任务,可推测前文为安排你的工作日。
根据文章第五段_The person who tries to do everything himself or herself not only is overloaded and over stressed, but is bad for their colleagues如果谁试图去独自做一切,不仅使自己过度超载和过度紧张,而且影响同事,可推测前文应为学会哪些任务可以被授权,哪些需要个人关注,故选F。
Much of the pressure is produced by ourselves可知不要对自己要求过高,工作过于努力,大部分压力都是我们自己生产的,可推测后文应为是我们自己设定了不合实际的目标或标准,故选B。
Ⅳ. Summary Writing(10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Most people look forward to retirement as a time when they can finally take up activities that they never had the time or energy to pursue before. Bust some recent studies on people in their golden years are disturbing: they suggest that retirees are more likely to suffer from depression and possibly higher rates of other diseases such as heart disease and high blood pressure. That’s why a new study of French workers is welcome news.
Led by Hugo Westerlund, a professor of psychology at Stockholm University, the study of more than 14,000 workers found lower rates of depression and fatigue(疲劳) in people after they got retired than while they were still employed.
The scientists followed the employees of the French national gas and electric company for 14 years. They found in the year immediately after retirement, the volunteers reported 40% fewer depressive symptoms than they had in the year before their retirement. The researchers also found an 81% drop in reports of both mental and physical fatigue over the same time period.
Clearly, said Westerlund, much of these decrease in physical and mental fatigue can be traced back to relief from the stresses of work. The decline in depressive symptoms suggests that retirement may be having a positive mental effect, too, which may have a lot to do with the generous pensions(养老金) that French workers enjoy. Most retirees in that country still benefit from about 80% of their yearly salaries.
“The economic or financial situation in retirement is very important,” Westerlund says. “We don’t know if the decrease in fatigue and depressive symptoms is because of the removal of something bad while in work or the addition of something good while in retirement. But no matter the reason, if life in retirement is not comfortable, then we won’t see the improvements we did.”
Many people expect to do what they want to do when they retire, but they also have diseases for retiring. One study reported that retired people tended to have less depression and fatigue, which can be owed to the relief from the stresses of work. Actually, the pensions and financial situations have much to do with their happiness in retirement (60words)

When it comes to micro-surgery, there have been widely publicized horror stories, including patients who have bled out during the procedure. Hence, the rise and bloom of micro-surgery has led to the public concern about its safety and necessity.
The reasons why micro-surgery is prevailing are as follows. First and foremost, the definition of beauty has changed dramatically over the past decades. In the past, beautiful women and men were distinct due to their different hairstyles and dressing. However, nowadays, pretty girls are almost alike or uniform with big eyes and a pointed chin. On top of that, the money-oriented mainstream values have altered the behaviors and ideology of the people and even the nation. Since the reform and opening-up, people now have led a better-off life which enables them to pursue material wealth. Micro-surgery is one of the few things people can show off among peers outwardly.
Nonetheless, I hold a firm belief that micro-surgery is neither a tool to revolutionize the beauty nor a golden time to display the wealth. Given the same amount of time and money, I would rather throw them into the sea than spend them on micro-surgery as we are born different. So be it.
