When we think of green buildings, we tend to think of new ones---the kind of modern, solar-paneled(太阳能板的) masterpieces that make the cover of architecture magazines. But the US has more than 100 million existing homes, and it would be incredibly 1     to tear them all down and2      them with greener versions.

An enormous amount of energy and resources went into the construction of those houses. And it would take an average of 65 years for the 3     carbon emission(排放) from a new energy-efficient home to make up for the 4     lost by destroying an old one.

So in the broadest sense, the greenest home is the one that has already been built. But at the same time, 5     half of US carbon emission come from heating, cooling and powering our homes, offices and other buildings. “ You can’t deal with climate 6     without dealing with existing buildings,” says Richard Moe, the president of the National Trust.

With some exceptions, the oldest homes tend to be the least energy-efficient. Houses built before 1939 use about 50% more energy per square foot than those built after 2000, mainly due to the tiny cracks(裂缝)and gaps that7      over time and let in more outside air.

8      , there are a vast number of relatively simple changes that can green older homes, from historic ones like Lincoln’s Cottage to your own postwar home. And efficiency upgrades can save more than just the earth; they can help  9    property owners from rising power 10      .

In the dentist’s office, I sat down and look around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.

When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.”

“How long do I have to wait for him ?” I asked impatiently.

“Come on, he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,” the assistant said.

         “The artwork?” I puzzled.

The chair went back, suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meat by her words.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycle also come in different color--silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.

It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroad, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks. Bicycle allow people the freedom to move about that cars can’t provide.

Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.

My first ride home was orderly. To be safe, I stayed with a “park” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.

Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United State. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time.

I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on the top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
