The long-awaited Nobel Prize 2013 has been announced. Alice Munro  31   was to be found on Oct. 10 when the Swedish Academy awarded her the Nobel Prize for Literature. They had to leave a voice message on her phone. The Canadian writer just appeared for a quick interview and 32 again.

“This is in character, for  Alice  Munro  has  never  33  the  spotlight  during  her  remarkable career”, wrote the Los Angeles Times.

Originally, Alice Munro dreamt  of  being  a  34  .  Later,  she  became  interested  in writing. As the author of 14 books, Alice Munro, is best known for her short stories. She has

Often compared to the 19th century Russian short story writer Anton Chekov, Alice Munro is known for her “  36   ” portrayals 描写,描绘of human beings”, as Peter Englund, secretary of the Nobel Prize 37 it.

Throughout her career, Alice Munro  has taken   38    from her home of Canada. Her    stories detail a  39   polite and respectable Canada. However, according to the Wall  Street   Journal, Alice Munro is at her best when she is   40   human despair and alienation in these   places. She often focuses on betrayals between men and women.

Ⅲ. Reading Comprehension Section A Cloze

Direction: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

As a teenager, I was pretty lazy when it came to doing things for my family. I worked hard at school, and sometimes looked after my younger sister. Still, I found myself regularly resisting the urge to (41)  out at home with even the simplest things.

Every Wednesday afternoon, for example, my mother drove me to another town for piano lesson. During my two-hour lesson, she’d rush to the nearby store and buy a week’s worth of groceries. Given the fact that my mom had driven me twelve miles there, twelve miles back, (42)

for my lesson, and bought me a candy bar, you’d think I’d be very grateful to help her bring the things into the house. But I wasn’t. I generally just brought in an armload and left the (43)

for Mom as I ran to my room, shut the door, and started studying.

Don’t get  me  wrong,  Even  back in my  room,  I left (44)  about not helping my mother more. Deep inside, I wanted to change my way. But I also realized that (45)  I did change, there’d be no going back. If I took on more responsibility, my parents would start expecting more of me. At age fifteen, I sensed that this one small change would (46)    something much bigger: my personal change from a cared-for, spoiled child to more responsible, caring and (47)  young man.

I’ll never forget the Wednesday when I made a decision to jump in and see what happened. Returning home from the lessons, I disappeared into my room, (48)  . But once inside, I felt that deep and burning shame. Throwing my school books on the bed, I suddenly opened my door and (49)  back to the garage to help my mother. How happy I felt that day!

Surely, over time, I continued to help out with more housework. The neat thing was, the more I helped out, the better I felt about myself and my place in my family. As Mom and Dad realized they could count on me more, our trips became far less stressful, too. In short, it was a win- win situation for everyone.

Sometimes  the little  things we (50)  doing the longest turn out to be the simplest things to complete. And feeling happy beats feeling bad any day.

( B )

Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding衬垫onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.

I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.

I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.

54. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?

A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.

B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.

D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

55. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to  .

A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor

B. meet her father who was already an old man

C. join in the holiday celebration of the company

D. finish her work before the deadline approached

56. The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to  .

A. abandoned B. lacked C. avoided D. wasted

57. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Emotional Well-being B. The Two Saddest Words

C. The Most Useful Rule D. The Peace of Mind

( C )

As you probably know, clothing has been around since the time of Adam and Eve – and it has become a lot more complex than the early fig leaf design. On the other hand, electronics have been with us for only a few hundred years – beginning with Franklin running around with his portable lightening rod. With gadgets more popular than ever these days, the combination of clothing and electronics was inevitable.

Frist let me mention a line of jackets launched in the fall of 2000 by Royal Philips’ Electronics and Levis Strauss & Amp Co. Philips’ original press release called it “mixing fashion with technology in the creation of work wear for the digital age”. I love that kind of talk.

Each design is said to contain “a simple body area network using wires in the body design”. What it really does is allow you to use a Philips Xenium GSN mobile phone and MP3 player in a jacket – all controlled by a universal remote.

A company name Vivo Metrics has designed a different type of electronic garment. It’s called Life Shirt, and it’s a hearing monitoring system in a flexible, washable T-shirt.

Vivo Metrics has built a system that allows doctors to monitor more than 40 physiological signs (heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, etc.) over extended periods of time while patients are away from a doctor’s office or hospital. One of the early target markets is people who suffer from sleep apnea(暂停).

“Various wires plug into a Springboard module that records and holds all of the medical

data. The patients can then send the information wirelessly to their doctor or send the module to the lab.”

But it says that this is the type of product that will probably never be available to consumers. Its real purpose is for clinical and medical research.

The company hopes to market the Life Shirt to medical companies and research centres conduction trails of new drugs. Vivo Metrics is going to show off the product. The company says  it has “secured one driver, Jon Herd, to wear the shirt during his race”.

I believe these products are only the tip of the iceberg. In the future I think we’ll see more varied combinations of electronics and clothing. They’ll find new ways to link future computer designs to clothing to improve our lives seamlessly(无缝地).

58. From the passage, we learn the jackets launched in the fall of 2000  .

B. introduce the development of clothing design

C. promote the great creations of the companies

61. What’s the author’s attitude towards the combination of electronics and clothing?

A. negative B. Optimistic C. Skeptical D. Objective

Finding the Real You

Psychometric testing---personality testing---has been very popular nowadays as studies show their results to be three times more accurate in predicting your job performance. These tests are now included in almost all graduate recruitment招聘and are widely used in the selection of managers.

The most popular of these personality tests is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBIT). It is based on the theory that we are born with a tendency to one personality type which stays more  or less fixed throughout life. You answer 88 questions and are then given your “type”, such as Outgoing or Quiet, Feeling or Thinking.

Critics  of  personality  testing  raise  doubts  about “social  engineering”.  Psychologist Dr.

Colin Gill warns that the popular” personality traits  特性have their disadvantages. People who

are extremely open to new experiences can be butterflies, going from one idea to the next without mastering any of them.” However, the psychometric test is here to stay, which may be why a whole sub-industry on cheating personality tests has sprung up. “It’s possible to cheat,” admits Gill, “but having to pretend to be the person you are at work will be tiring and unhappy and probably short-lived.”

So can we change our personality? “Your basic personality is fixed by the time you’re 21,” says Gill, “but it can be affected by motivation and intelligence. If you didn’t have the personality type to be a doctor but desperately wanted to be one and were intelligent enough to master the skills, you could still go ahead. But trying to go too much against type for too long requires much energy and is actually to be suffered for long. I think it’s why we’re seeing this trend for downshifting --- too many people trying to fit into a type that they aren’t really suited for.”

Our interesting personality now exists in every part of our lives. If you ask an expert for advice on anything, you’ll probably be quizzed about your personality. But if personality tests  have any value to us, perhaps it is to free us from the idea that all of us are full of potential, and remind us of what we are. As they say in one test when they ask for your age: pick the one you are, not the one you wish you were.

62. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is based on the belief that  .

A. personality is largely decided from birth

B. certain personality traits are common

C. some personality types are better than others

D. personality traits are various from time to time

63. According to Dr. Gill, what is the problem with personality tests?

A. Employers often find the results unclear.

B. They may have a negative effect on takers.

C. People can easily lie about their true abilities.

D. The results could be opposite to what employers want.

64. In Dr. Gill’s view, how easy is it to change your personality?

A. It’s possible in your adult life.

B. It’s easy if you have great motivation.

C. It’s difficult before the age of 21.

D. It’s unlikely because it requires much energy.

65. What final conclusion does the author reach about the value of personality tests?

A. They are not really worth doing.

B. They may encourage greater realism.

C. They are of doubtful value to employers.

D. They can strengthen the idea we have of our abilities.
