Rescue in the Rapids
ON A BREEZY Saturday in April 2014,former police officer Kevin O'Connor and his son, Ryan, were standing in a park near the Fox River in Geneva.Illinois.As Kevin gazed at the river, he caught sight of several people on the bank (21) (motion)toward the water. When
he looked in that direction,he noticed a bright red boat turning in a spinning circle in the stormy water at the base of the Geneva Dam,300 feet away.
Kevin assumed the person on the boar(22) (jump )out of it."Then I heard a
warning signal with a loud sound."says Kevin, now 42.That's (23) I realized somebody was in trouble."
He couldn't see anyone in the river,(24) he sped toward the bank and dashed into the freezing water.About 150 feet from shore,he spied an object moving downriver."I
thought it was a life jacket."he says."When I caught up to it,I realized it(25) (attach)to a person".
Now in water up to his neck.Kevin grabbed the man.(26) who was floating on his back unconscious, under both armpits and held his head above the surface.Kevin struck the
man's chest again and again. After five hits.the man coughed up water and began speaking incoherently.Just back to life, the man was still weak.Battling the current,Kevin sidestepped his way(27) the shoreline, repeatedly digging his shoes into the river's rocky bottom.
When he reached the bank, someone jumped into the river and helped Kevin lift the 200-pound drowning man over a six-foot brick retaining wall to waiting doctors, who took him away in an ambulance. The man recovered, but a friend who was boating with him died after being trapped underwater near the dam.
Kevin pulled ( 28) up to sit on the shore beside Ryan.who had followed his father's path down the river."When I caught my breath,I realized I saved someone's life, which is what (29) do."Kevin says.
In December 2015.Kevin received an award from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. "Lots of honour-receivers lost their lives saving someone,"he says."(30) (put)in the same category is very humbling."

MIT Researchers Want to Teach Robots How to Wash Dishes
The robots arrived years ago. They help build stuff in factories. They shuttle packages and products across the massive warehouses that drive Amazons worldwide retail 31 .And so much more. But the people at MIT expect a robot that can operate with a bit more subtlety(细微之处).a robot that needn't operate according to 32 movements. This machine could respond to changes in its 33 environment, much like humans do,and judge what will happen when one action is 34 over another. They expect a robot that can do your dishes.
Thar's a harder task than you might think. It involves 35 what will happen when you pile one dish on top of another, when you put it under the kitchen faucet(水龙头),when you place it in your dish washer machine. We humans do this 36 ,and MIT aim to imitate this kind of intuition with hardware and software.
These won't be 37 robots, which have a pretty finely defined set of actions that they need to take over and over again These are robots that must deal with 38 .If a robot places dishes in a dishwasher,it must understand the subtleties of how they pile on top of each other. It
must know if it will topple(打翻)chem if it takes a certain action. It must 39 environments.
In reality you're still a long way from your own dish-washing robotic house you're not as far away as you were.

A Study of Point of View and Argument
Everyday life is an interaction of points of view.Sometimes these interactions pass by virtually
_41,like when you find yourself forced to buy the newest cell phone but suddenly stop and ask yourself,"Do I even need this thing?”and then realize that the latest ad campaign has 42_you of something without you really knowing it.Sometimes these interactions with others are obvious and deeply felt, like when an emotional argument43_over why your father won't quit smoking even though his health is_44_-you only see your desire for him to be OK,he only sees his independence. Then there are those times when these sorts of 45_feel delighted -like when you voice your opinion,as you do every year at the Thanksgiving table.about some political issue, and finally-after years of trying-see the46_of 'hmm, you may be right' on your uncle's face.
Advertising.media, novels and even the people you love often aim to_47_our opinions. We see the usual practice of close reading not just as a method of doing the academic work of looking closely at text evidence, word and structure, but as an opportunity to bring those practices
together,to 48_our students to see the subtle messages in texts and in their lives,to help them be strong and_49 consumers of ideas and reflective, caring members of society.
One large, multi -year study suggested that many students graduated without being able to distinguish_50 _from the influence of carefully designed opinions and public relations. We believe educators can help 51 this.We want our students to be able to recognize the points of view and arguments in texts and in life-to see when they are happening and to 52 engage them.We want our students to listen to those points of view and arguments with an open mind-to truly listen to what other people believe and respectfully_53 or question what they are saying We also want our students to live with the confidence of 54 themselves to make sound_55 ,to make sense of the
world, and to take risks.Reading closely in this way can give our students a healthy skepticism(质厦)while also helping them to have a more open mind.

On 8th November 1974 Lord Lucan ,a British aristocrat( 贵 族 ).disappeared.The day before,The day before, his children's nanny had been murdered and his wife had been attacked too.To this day the British public are still interested in the murder case because Lucan has never been found.Now.over 30 years later, the police have reopened the case, hoping that new DNA techniques will help solve this murder mystery.
People suspected that"Lucky',as he was called by friends, wanted to kill his wife he no longer lived with. They say that Lucan entered his old house and,in the dark, killed the nanny by mistake. His wife heard noises, came downstairs and was also attacked.but managed to escape.
Seven months later after the murder,a jury concluded that Lucan had killed the nanny.
What happened next is unclear, but there are several theories which fall into ore of three categories:he may have killed himself,he could have escaped or he might have been killed. It appears that the night after the murder.Lucky borrowed a car and drove it to the English coast. In 2000.John Aspinall ,a close friend of Lucan's said in an interview that he thought Lucan had committed suicide by sinking his boat in the English Channel.
Another version of events says that Lucky' left the blood-soaked car on the coast and look a ferry to France. He was met there by someone who drove him to safety in another country.However.after a time, his rescuers became worried that they would become involved in the murder too and so Lucan was killed.
A further fascinating theory was made in the book Dead Lucky by Duncan Maclaughlin, a former detective. He believes that Lucan travelled to Goa,India.where he assumed the identity of a Mr Barry Haplin Lucan then lived in Goa till his death in 1996.In the end the claim turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. The man who died in 1996 was really Haplin. an ex-school teacher tuned Hippy. So what is the truth about"Lucky"? With the coming of big data age, data science is supposed to be starved for,of which the
adaption can point a profound change in corporate competitiveness.Companies, both born in the digital era and traditional world are showing off their skills in data science. Therefore,it seems to have been creating a great demand for the experts of this type.
Mr Carlos Guestrin, machine learning professor from University of Washington argues that all software applications will need inbuilt intelligence within five years, making data
scientists-people trained to analyze large bodies of information-key workers in this emerging "cognitive"technology economy. There are already critical applications that depend on machine learning,a subfield of data science, led by recommendation programs, fraud detection systems. forecasting tools and applications for predicting customer behavior.
Many companies that are born digital - particularly internet companies that have a great number of real-time customer interactions to handle-ate all-in when it comes to data science.
Pinterest ,for instance, maintains more than 100 machine learning models that could be applied
to different classes of problems, and it constantly fields requests from managers eager to use this resource to deal with their business problem.
The factors weighing on many traditional companies will be the high cost of mounting.a serious machine-learning operation Netflix is estimated to spend S150 million a year on a single
application and the total bill is probably four times that once all its uses of the technology are taken into account.
Another problem for many non-technology companies is talent.Of the computer science experts who use Kaggle, only about 1,000 have deep learning skills, compared to 100,000 who can apply other machine learning techniques, says Mr Goldbloom. He adds that even some big companies of this type are often reluctant to expand their pay scales to hire the top talent in this field.
The biggest barrier to adapting to the coming era of"smart"applications, however,is likely to be cultural. Some companies, such as General Electric.have been building their own Silicon Valley presence to attract and develop the digital skills they will need.
Despite the obstacles, some may master this difficult transition. But companies that were built, from the beginning, with data science at their center, are likely to represent serious competition.
63. Which one is obstacle for many traditional companies to popularize learning operation?
A.Technological problem. B.Expert crisis.
C.High cost. D.Customer interactions.
64. What can not be inferred from the passage about the machine learning?
A. Machine learning operations are costly in Netflix
B. Machine learning plays an important role in existent applications
C. Machine learning experts are not highly paid in some non-technology companies!
D. Machine learning models are not sufficient to solve business problems in Pinterest.
65. What's the author's main purpose in writing this article?
A. To point out the problems facing machine learning experts.
B. To call on companies to cultivate more experts in data science.
C. To tell the readers the present situation of data science.
D. To advice non-technology companies to look beyond the advantages they face.
66. which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A.Data science:A forefront force in tech business B.Corporate competition:An obstacle to the transition C.Machine learning:A key to smart technology D.Technique experts:A decisive factor of the coming era.

A Dream Come True
The young professor was working in his workshop in a narrow street in Boston, not far from Scollay Square. It was a very hot afternoon in June, but the man did not notice. He was
totally absorbed in his strange machine which he had been working on for about three years.Suddenly he heard an almost inaudible sound, the first sound ever transmitted through a wire. The machine was the very first telephone and the young man was Alexander Graham Bell.
At the age of 16 Alexander started to help teach young deaf mutes.children who could not hear or speak. He used his father's system of 'visible speech'.a form of sign language, and achieved amazing results. 67 Mr Alexander Ellis,a professor of philology, and Sit Charles Wheatstone,an expert in telegraphy.started him thinking about sending sounds through a machine.
Unfortunately,it was around this time that the fatal disease called the white plague, spread through Britain and both Alexander's brothers died. 68 Alexander was teaching to a tribe of Mohawk Indians in a small Canadian town called Brantford, when the Boston Board of Education asked him to come and work in the USA at a new school for deaf mutes.
Alexander was happy to move to Boston and continue the work he had stated in Britain.
69
Then, two years later,he agreed to give private lessons to a young boy whose family allowed him to use their basement as a workshop. This gave Alexander the opportunity to resume his experiments with sound transmitters. He used to spend all his free time.and most of his money.on his inventions. 70 She was a young girl who had lost her tearing and the ability to speak because of a childhood illness. Her name was Mabel Hubbard, and four years later they got married.
In order to survive financially Bell had to work on the musical telegraph, but he also continued working on his mechanical voice transmitter.,He became so successful that he soon opened his own school called"The School of Vocal Physiology".Almost a year later,in March 1876.the first words were heard coming through the phone.

Get stressed stay young
For decades we have been warned of the dangers of stress and have given us advice about how to cut down our stress levels. However, some medical experts now believe that certain kinds of stress may actually be good tor us.
Dr Marios Kyriazis,an anti-aging expert, claims that what he calls "good stress"is beneficial to our health and may.in fact, help us stay young and attractive and even live longer.Dr.Kyriazis says that"good stress"can strengthen our natural defenses.which protect us from illnesses common among old people, such as Alzheimer's,arthritis, and heart problems. He believes that"good stress"can increase the production of proteins that help repair the body's cell, including brain cells.
According to Dr Kyriazis, running for a bus or having to work for a deadline are examples of"good stress,"that is,situations with short-term,low.or moderate stress. The stress usually makes us react quickly and efficiently, and gives us a sense of achievement-we did it!However, in both these situations, the stress damages the cells in our body or brain, and they start to break down. But then the cells own repair mechanism"switches on"and produces proteins that repair the damaged cells and remove harmful chemicals that can gradually cause disease. In fact, the body's response is greater than needed to repair the damage,so it actually makes the cells stronger than they were before.
"As the body gets older, this self-repair mechanism of the cells start to slow down."says Dr. Kyriazis."The best way to keep the process working efficiently is to' exercise 'it.in the same way
you would exercise your muscles to keep them strong. This means having a certain amount of stress in our lives."
