l FISH

First-time owners should consider getting cold-water fish as no tank (鱼缸) heater is required. They should research what kinds of fish get along in the same tank, and be aware of life expectanciessome goldfish can live up to 20 years.

l RABBITS

Though rabbits, or nickname bunnies, may seem like a lovely choice, they can live up to ten years and require an amount of care similar to that of a dog or cat. l GUINEA PIGS (豚鼠,荷兰猪)

These small animals are ideal starter pets. Their cages must be cleaned daily, and they require toys to keep their ever growing teeth in check. Once theyre used to the new way of life, guinea pigs need daily exercise in a small room without cracks or holes for escape. They don’t want to be alone, but if you get two, make sure theyre the same sex or theyll have babies.

If you look around the streets of London, you’ll see the many methods people use to move around. Whether it’s a way to work, a trip to the shops, or a sightseeing trip, there are people on buses, the underground, cars, motorbikes, bicycles and even roller skates. The roads are already    75   ; and now there’s a new addition: electric, or “e-scooters”.

This traditional children’s vehicle has become more welcomed over the years. And now, with a small electric motor, it’s become a cheap and easy way of    76   . Scooting around town can be fun and doesn’t need much effort, so they’re becoming increasingly welcomed in cities around the world. But following some serious accidents caused by an electric scooter in the UK, questions are being asked about their safety and    77    traffic laws should be changed.

Some scooter riders have been seen on pavements; others on the road jumping red traffic lights, adding to traffic jams on the road. In the UK, the law says that riding one on the public highway or pavement is not    78   . Riders now face a £300 punishment and six points on their driving license for doing so. But, still e-scooters can be seen    79   . And now users are calling on rules to be changed.

The UK government is looking at how safely they can be used on the road and is examining the law again. But the official said, “It is an    80    product. We know there is need among people. However, safety must always be the first to consider when talking about their use on public highways in this country.”

There are dangers in riding a two-wheeled scooter. Some of them can drive at high speed, over 30mph. They sometimes only have one brake (刹车) and no lights. It seems more work needs to be done to give e-scooters a safe and right space to travel in.

My dad is a patient, loving and giving person but his kind spirit that really touched me was one night as we were driving home after visiting my grandmother.

Pulling up at a small crossing, we saw a car stopped in the m   81    of the road. An older lady was talking on her phone and staring up at a street sign, clearly trying to work out where she was. She came back to her car, looking more u   82   . Dad watched her out of his rear-view (后视) mirror before pulling over to see if he could help. As he stood at her window and asked if she was OK, she broke down in tears, explaining she had lost her way.

It turned out she was a caregiver (照料者) and was t   83    to find the house of the client she was meant to be helping that night. When she showed Dad the address she was meant to be at, Dad handed her his b  84    card and told her to follow him, and to call him on the number on the card if she lost us in t   85   .

My dad drove to the address, only a suburb or two out of our way, and found the house for her. The look of thankfulness on her face was reward enough for Dad.

The next morning as Dad was driving me to school his phone rang. It was the lady hed helped the night b   86   , calling him to thank him again for his kind deed. I dont think I’ve ever been so p   87    to be his daughter.

D. Answer the questions根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 12)

It was a cool spring morning back in 2009 and I had just started a morning shift as a school crossing guard. Looking out for the children, I suddenly noticed something at sideways. Behind me I first thought it was a small, overweight dog heading towards me. I didnt think much about it, and looked carefully at any approaching children, as well as enjoying the morning sun.

What is wrong with that dog? I thought later on, as I looked back to check on the small dogit was moving much too fast for itself.

A few minutes later, I felt as if I was being watched, I looked behind me, but the dog had disappeared. Then, as I slowly turned my attention back to the road, I was greatly surprised to see a large koala at my feet and staring right up at me.

A number of different solutions crossed my mind. But staying calm was the best. Are you waiting to cross the road? I asked the sweet koala. Miss Koala looked away, and scratched (抓挠)behind her ear.

Then it got up on all four feet and impatiently started to cross

the road. I quickly checked for any cars, then walked to the road with my stop sign held high, whistle (吹哨)to my lips, and held my breath.

The koala made it to the other side of the street, then continued following the path through the trees and disappeared into bushes.

So why did the koala cross at the school crossing? To safely get to the trees on the other side!

I grew up in libraries, or at least it feels that way. My family lived in the suburbs, about a mile from the local Public Library. Throughout my childhood, my mother drove me there a couple of times a week.

Our visits were never long enough for me. I loved walking around the shelves, scanning the names of the books until something happened to catch my eye. On the way home, we talked about the order in which we were going to read. My mother used to dream about being a librarian.

When I was older, I usually walked to the library by myself. My mother died two years ago, and since then, when I miss her, I like to picture us in the car together, going for one more trip to the library.

After I got married, my husband accepted a job in Los Angeles, so we left New York.

My son was in first grade at that time. One of his first school tasks was to interview someone who worked for the city. My son said that he wanted to interview a librarian. So we went to the closest library. It was about a mile away from our house. Oh, the same distance!

As we drove over to meet the librarian, I experienced a touching memory of this similar journey in my past — another parent and child on their way to the library. A library, for me, is a gathering pool of stories. In the library, we can somehow live forever.

D. Listen to the passage and complete the following sentences (听对话,完成下列内容,每空

格限填一词): (10)

What does your father do at home every night? What do you talk about or do together? A boy wrote to me saying that he had a problem with his father. His father was nice but very busy. When they were together, it was often just in embarrassing silence. He didnt know what to talk about with his father. He asked me for advice. Here is what I wrote back. My first piece of advice is telling your father everything you told me in your letter. But if you were not that brave, here are some tricks to start conversations. First, remember that everyone loves to talk about themselves. So ask your father something about it. For example, ask him, Whats something you loved to do in your childhood, but you never have time to do it anymore”. Youll learn something about him and have a new topic to talk about next time. Another way is to tell him about something bad that happened to you. Ask him about a time when he was troubled. You can change troubled to any other word, embarrassed, sad or unhappy. Here is one more trick. You can find thousands of questions online. If your father asks why you have so many strange questions, tell him your English teacher shared them and you think they are fine. I think this can get your conversation started.
