Some English words have more than one meaning. These are called multi-meaning words.

Multi-meaning words have the same pronunciation with different meanings. For example, let's look at the word “ball”. You could have a “ball” which means you would have a good time. You could toss a “ball” which means you throw an object. You could be on the “ball” which means you know what is happening. You could go to a “ball” which means a dance.

Take the word “can”. You “can” ride a bike which means you are able to ride a bike. You have a “can” of soup which means the soup is in a round-shaped holder. You can do the “can-can” which is a dance from the 1920s. And you might get “canned” if you do a poor job at work, which means you might lose your job.

How about “fly”? You can “fly” an airplane or you can hit a “fly” that is on your food in your house. Or, you can “fly by the seat of your pants” which means you don’t make a plan before taking an action. And, you know that the “fly” of a zipper(拉链)is the top part of the zipper.

There are hundreds of words that are multi-meaning words. The word “set” has more meanings than any other word in the English language. When you have time, why don’t you try to think of all the ways the word “set” is used?

If you look at the title of this book Can a Fly, Fly? ... you know that the answer is “Yes” because you have seen an insect named a “fly” go up in the air and move around through the air…which is what “fly” means. Can a Fly, Fly? Of course, it can!

Students who get tired of looking at the four walls of a classroom might like to take the nature course being offered by Carvel College again this summer. Groups of about a dozen students each, led by an experienced guide, will go on ten-day camping trips to the mountains to study the plants and animals that grow and live there.

Students carry their own things, which includes sleeping bags, warm clothing, food and water, and other useful tools. And what do the students do all day? Well, as soon as the sun comes up, they eat breakfast and start climbing up the mountain trail to the next campground, which is five to ten miles away. As the students take notes, the guide points out different plants and animals alongside the trail. The climb is usually over by early afternoon, so the group spends the rest of the day resting or swimming in a mountain lake. Before dinner each night, they all come together and discuss the day's activities.

At the end of the course, the students write reports using the information they have collected. But they don't mind at all. What they do mind is leaving the beauty of the wilderness and the good friends they've made to return to their normal lives in the city.

Have you ever seen snow? Many people in the world have not. Some countries never have snow; some have only a little on the tops of very high mountains. In the north of England, there is quite a lot of snow every winter, but in the south of England, there is usually little.

When a student from a warm country comes to England in autumn for the first time, he feels cold at first.

There are often dark clouds, grey sky and cold rain in England in autumn, and most students from warm countries do not like this.

But snow is different. Though it is cold, it is also beautiful. Perhaps, after several dark mornings, the student wakes up one day, and there is a lot of light in his room. He thinks "Is it so late?" and jumps out of bed. But no, it is not very late. He looks out of the window and there is the snow on the ground and on the houses and everywhere. The light of his room comes from clean, beautiful snow.

1. In which part of England is there much snow in winter?

A. In the east.  B. In the north.  C. In the west.  D. In the south.

2. In the autumn of England, we can NOT often see ________.

A. grey sky   B. dark clouds  C. strong winds  D. cold rain

3. Why does the student ask himself "Is it so late?"

A. Because he has some work to do.   B. Because it is bright in the room.

C. Because it is really late.            D. Because he usually gets up early.

4. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Every country in the world has snow in winter.

B. Foreign students like the weather in England.

C. It is often very warm in the autumn of England.

D. Many people in the world haven't seen snow.

For many years, scientists have known that laughing is good for the health of our minds and bodies. Now we are learning that it's not just laughter. Having fun and playing are also good for us! Researchers have found that play is good for people of all ages. Play actually leads to the growth of more nerve connections in the brain and gives us more brain power.

Play is necessary during childhood. As children play, they learn how to make friends and relate to others. They develop their imaginations and become more creative. Kids carry these qualities with them as they grow older.

Amy Whitcomb teaches maths at a school in San Francisco. For several years, she has used games to teach maths. In one class, students play a game with small bags of candy to figure out how many pieces in the bags are red. When they get the correct answer, they can eat the candy! Amy says, If it’s not fun, they’re not going to want to be there. They’re not going to want to learn.

The spirit of playfulness continues through the teenage years into adulthood (成人期). The famous company Google, for example, keeps a lot of toys and games at different places in their offices and encourages people to use them. Their motto is Work hard. Play hard. They know that people often get their best ideas when they are just playing around and let their imaginations go wild.

So next time you have to solve a difficult maths problem or can't think of a topic for an article, take a short play break. Do a little dance, or play a quick game. Then come back to it. Maybe you'll be surprised at what your brain can do.

 1. The example of the company Google is given to show that _______.

A. play is also fit for adults                        B. everyone there works hard

C. they have a lot of toys and games         D. it is very famous in the world

 2. The underlined expression figure out in Paragraph 3 probably means _______.

look after         B. solve the problem of   C. draw a picture of         D. play a joke on

3. According to the passage, you need to play if you _______.

A. want to make friends with others                B. have to do some homework
