1.(6分)     A woman was sitting by herself in a movie theatre. The movie she was about to see was a musical version (版本) of a very successful book that had sold a million copies that year.

As the woman was waiting for the movie to begin, she noticed that the theatre was very crowded but the two seats next to her were empty.

Suddenly a large man carrying a big fur coat walked down the aisle (走廊) and sat down, placing the fur coat on the seat next to her.

When the lights went out, the fur coat began to move, and the woman realized it was not a coat but a large furry dog. He was sitting up in the seat, watching the movie screen with great interest. As soon as the movie started, the dog began to nod his head and beat his paws (爪) in perfect time to the music.

When the movie was over, the woman turned to the man and said, "Excuse me, sir, but I've never seen such a well-behaved dog in a movie theatre before. Does he go to the movies often?"

     "Oh, yes," replied the man.

2.(8分)     I am Henry Jekyll. I was born in the 1800s. I inherited (继承) a large fortune, a healthy body and an excellent mind. I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job. So the outside world saw a serious, hard-working, successful doctor. Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild, fun-loving, irresponsible young man. Both of them were me. They lived together in the same body.

"Was it possible," I wondered, "to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?"

After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer. I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug. At last I got everything ready.

Late one night, I mixed everything together and prepared my drug. I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely, I drank every bitter drop.

I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place. Wild thoughts danced through my mind- the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. "If this is pure evil," I thought, "I like it."

I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room, I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.

At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side. Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man. I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men. Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde's eyes. I felt no dislike, however. Indeed, I welcomed him. Edward Hyde was me, young and strong and full of life.

4.(8分)     To start a conversation about the secret to happiness, ABC News' health editor Dr. Richard Besser hosted a Twitter chat Tuesday. Experts from the National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic, Harvard University and TEDMED, as well as clinicians and people from across the country, joined the one-hour discussion. There are countless ways to measure happiness. With research on the topic increasing, researchers have carried out surveys to study people's sense of well-being.

Angela Haupt, health and wellness editor for U.S. News and World Report, said, "Happiness indicators include life satisfaction, health and community engagement."

@toddkashdan added that, "despite problems with self-reports, there is no better way to measure happiness than focusing on personal thoughts and feelings."

While scientists try to find out what caused happiness, others often believe that true joy doesn't exist. Dr Friedman, a psychiatrist at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Hospital, said that "happiness is hard to measure, but easy to recognize."

Still, common themes about satisfaction come up in these conversations. Finding meaning in daily work was important. Indeed, researchers have found that having creative and purposeful work to do is a key factor in happiness. But people were quick to state the importance of balancing work and family obligations.

Chat participants (参与者) agreed that money does not surely bring happiness. And studies agree once people's basic needs like food and housing are met, higher incomes do little to improve your happiness. At last, people found value in their connections with others. Research shows that having support through friends, family, and social networks can bring happiness. Many agree with @drmommy, who said "I measure my happiness by the loving people that are around me."

So, can we increase our happiness? Expressing gratitude (感激) is a possible way of feeling happiness. Researchers have found that people who regularly write down things for which they are grateful in "gratitude journals" have increased satisfaction in life, higher energy levels, and improved health. In one study, people who read a letter of appreciation to someone in their lives prove happier almost one month later. Performing acts of kindness can raise your moods.

Data show that our relationships matter, too. People who are interested in meaningful conversations with friends or family are reported to be happier than those who don't. Close interpersonal ties and strong social support are important for happiness.

(1)Dr Friedman may agree that ____.

A.happiness can be measured by health

          A.poor           B.sensitive           C.unhealthy           D.hopeless
