Human needs water, and every drop of water is precious. On March 22nd, World Water Day is a day to celebrate water and make a difference for people who do not have the water they need.

The truth about the world

The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but this is not the case for many people around the world. Did you know that around 750 million people do not have clean water to drink? Thats around 1 in 10 people in the world.

But what does this mean?

If we drink dirty water or we cant wash our hands when we go to the toilet, we can catch diseases from the bacteria (细菌) and become ill. Every year over 500,000 children die from dirty water. Thats around 1,4000 children every day! In Ghana, 85% of all disease are from dirty water, and in Nicaragua, 75% of the people don't have clean drinking water. Also, in some countries children walk many kilometers every day to get water, they can't go to school so they don't learn how to read and write and dont get an education.

Water for everyone

In 1993 the United Nations decided that March 22nd is the World Day for Water. On this day every year, countries around the world hold events to educate people about the problems of dirty water and that clean water is something that everyone should have around the world. People organize events to raise money and this money helps countries like Nigeria or Nicaragua get clean water to its people so that children don't die from diarrhea (腹泻) and so that they can go to school.

For World Water Day, some people in the UK walk, run or cycle 101an, others climb   mountains or even jump from an aeroplane and skydive to the ground. At one school children between the ages of 10 and 15 walk 6 km with 6 litres of water so they can see how it feels to walk along distance carrying heavy bottles of water. People give them money to do these things and all the money helps get clean water to as many people as possible around the world.

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(资源). Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at l  61   one river running through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.

Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can t  62   along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeastern Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil(巴西). It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles up it.

B   63   transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun. In order to increase the supply(供给) of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam (大坝) a   64    a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their fields but also to p   65   electricity for their homes and industries.

However, large cities and industries that are located on rivers often cause problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with c   66   and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits (利益) of these natural resources.

My stay in the rainforest

Last year, I left my job and went to Borneo to work without pay in the rainforest. So many people have said to me, " I would love to do something like that, " and I say, "If you want to, just do it. " They always reply, "I can't." But, if you really want to do it, there are ways to make it happen.

After three day's training, I started work on an environmental project with a group of young people.  The accommodation (住宿) was very basic and we had to build our own 'bedroom' . It had a simple bed, a cloth roof and a net to keep insects out.

It was never dangerous there, but it was very challenging (挑战的). There were things that we didn't think we would manage to do, but we did. I had some of my worst moments there, but also some of my best - it made me feel alive. I didn't miss my home comforts as much as I'd thought I might. We had food, water, somewhere to stay, about three sets of clothes and really good talk. We were in the most beautiful place and we had things to keep us busy. We didn't need any more.

Before we came here, it was really important to me what clothes I wore and who my friends were. I was always thinking about shoes, but really none of that matters. Here, people like me for who I am, what I believe and think, not for what kind of clothes I wear.
