The next time when I got close to it, instead of complaining as usual, I told myself that this hill would help me to keep fit. And the r  84    was that I found the way up the hill was much easier than I had expected — it cost me nothing but some energy and sweat ().

Several days later, I happened to read an article about pilot Douglas Bader. D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题) 12分)

Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you? Perhaps a person let you go in front of them in a queue. Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going. Or perhaps a stranger or a friend gave you a hand in a much deeper way. There are a thousand ways to offer kindness. And at a time when the world seems to have so many problems, some people have started to take the issue of kindness very seriously indeed!

Being kind is a win-win situation. It brings happiness to the receiver as well as the person who does the action. As a simple example, let’s imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job. How about taking a moment to mention this to him? Your workmate will be happy to receive some praise, and you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread a little joy.

Many organizations try to encourage people to do kind acts, wherever and whenever they can. The idea behind this is that it doesn’t take any major plan to be kind. Perhaps the strongest supporters of this idea are the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation, who work with schools and companies to teach people kindness skills. They operate under the beliefs that kindness can be taught and that it is contagious(有感染力的). Their activities range from suggesting kind acts to allowing their website-users to become “RAKtivists” (people who officially register themselves as activists of kindness).

Apart from using your own common sense, the RAK website suggests some more imaginative ways to show kindness. Generally, these fall into three types. The first is interpersonal kindness. Some examples are donating(捐赠) old clothes to charity or writing an advantageous online idea about a restaurant that you like. The second is environmental kindness, which could mean simply recycling or organizing a group event to tidy up a local park or beach. The third type is less clear: personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly, such as taking a walk in parks, inviting yourself to a big meal or setting yourself a goal to complain less. By being kind to yourself,         93           .

Five years passed quickly. The wise men returned with their camels, carrying 5, 000 books full of wisdom. Seeing so many books, the king was so amazed that he didn’t know how to start, so he ordered the wise men to shorten the books and bring them back to him. Another five years passed. The wise men again went to see the king, this time bringing 500 books, but the king still thought there were too many. Five more years passed. During the next few years, the wise men worked hard to shorten the 50 books into one book and presented it to the king. The king took no interest in reading this book, nor did he have time to learn from it. The chance between the 30-year-old man from Scotland and a five-year-old kitten has led to a book, to be announced tomorrow.

“The small cat has completely changed my life,” Nocholson said last week. He said he had been trying to avoid “going down the wrong path in life” when he gave up his job in Dunbar, East Lothian, and left on a round-the-world bike ride.

He named the kitten Nala, after a character in The Lion King: “She was so young, so tiny—but so friendly, too.”

He put her in his bike basket, took more videos of their journey through eight countries—they are now in Sofia, Bulgaria—and got a huge online following.

Nicholson now devotes his travels to rescuing cats and helping them find homes. His book, to be published this autumn, will be called Nala’s World.
