When I was a teenager, I got lost in a foreign country. I was in Berlin (柏林), Germany, on my month-long mission trip in Europe. My team and I had one night there to spend however we pleased. Most of my teammates decided to stay indoors and relax. But I did not want to pass up the chance to explore Berlin.

I visited a lot of major attractions around the city that night. When I got tired off, I checked the time on my watch. I was surprised to see that it was two o’clock in the morning! As I walked to a subway station, I realized that it was my dad’s birthday. This would be the first birthday I couldn’t celebrate with him because he passed away a few months earlier. Before I could begin reminiscing (回忆) about my dad, the train was about to leave. I dashed onto the train. At first, I was thankful to have made it onto the train. But it quickly turned to panic (恐慌) when I noticed that the train was headed in the wrong direction!

I looked around the nearly empty train. I saw a young woman sitting quietly by the window and came up to her “Hi. Do you speak English? I’m lost. Can you help me?” I asked.

The woman understood. She told me how to return to where I had first gotten on the train. But

I was too nervous to follow her instructions. Without thinking, I asked, “Can you come with me?” Her face froze at my sudden request (要求). After a long second of hesitation, she agreed to help me.

On the journey back to my train station, she and I chatted. We shared our life stories, our sadness and our hopes for the future. At my stop, she thanked me for sharing so much with her. She also told me how I had encouraged her. I couldn’t believe this stranger with the big heart was thanking me! I gave her a hug and thanked her for her incredible (难以置信的) kindness.

What is love? It’s a simple word with so much meaning.

People around the world are talking about love today. And not without reasonlove is a wonderful feeling! But close your eyes and    75     love for a minute. What does love mean to you? Love is a feeling, but what else is it?

Love is    76

We can find that love is not always expressed through words. If you are in love, you keep thinking of ways to show your love to the other person. When you are completely in love, there's    77     you wouldn’t do to show your feelings to the person you love.

Love is sacrifice (牺牲)

Sometimes showing your love includes sacrifice. An old saying says, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” And there are hundreds of books filled with stories of people giving their lives for their country, family or friends. When you love someone dearly, no sacrifice is too great.    78    , laying down your life doesn’t actually mean losing your life. It can mean giving up something you want for someone else. We can all choose to sacrifice our needs and wants for the sake of (为了) others. Learning how to love means learning how to be selfless.

Love is sharing

Some might say that love is giving. But I believe it goes beyond giving because love is about    79    . So I like to say, Love is sharing! When you have a lot of love in your heart, you want to share it with the ones you love. Love is the reason why our parents share their life experiences. Love is the reason why our friends share their joys and sorrows. Love is the reason why our teachers share their knowledge and friendship. Love comes from everyone around you.

What’s love like? It is just like the    80    . We can’t see it, but we can always feel it.

75. A) find out B) look for C) go over D) think about

76. A) wisdom B) language C) action D) pleasure

77. A) everything     B) nothing C) something D) anything

78. A) Besides B) Therefore C) In addition D) However

79. A) happiness B) relationship C) honesty D) charity

80. A) chocolate B) light C) wind D) flower

C. Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words (在短文的空格内填入适当的词, 使内容通顺, 每空格限填一词,首字母已给)  (14)

We all know vacations (假期) are good for our health. But which kind of vacation is better: one long vacation or several short ones? Here is information from research studies about the benefits (好处) of each kind of vacation.

The benefits of a long vacation:

International travel has big benefits. For example, people who travel abroad are more c____81____ when they come home. When people visit other countries, they discover different ways people live. This results in more ways of thinking and better problem solving.

Some studies show that people do not sleep well until day two or three of their vacation. After day two or day three, they sleep well for the w____82____ vacation. They also sleep well for one week after the vacation. A long vacation means better sleep for more days.

Traveling on vacation can be stressful. It takes time and money to travel. If you have a long vacation, you get more days of relaxation for your days of travel stress.

If there is a problem at work during your vacation, your coworkers (同事) are more likely to take care of the problem. They are not likely to wait for you. The result? You have l____83____ work when you come back.

The benefits of short vacations:

Studies discovered that people enjoy p____84____ their vacation as much as they enjoy taking the vacation. If you decide to take four short vacations a year, you can experience the fun of making arrangements for four different times.

Many people do not call the office during a short vacation. People on long vacations are more likely to check email and worry about work. For example, France has the highest number of vacation days (an average of 30 days a year). It a____85____ has the highest number of people (93%) who check their work email.

Vacations improve our a____86____ to our lives, our families, and ourselves. When we get back to work, we quickly forget all those positive (积极的) feelings. Taking several short vacations a year helps you feel positive about your life more often.

We are busy all the time. It is difficult to find a complete week when everyone can go on vacation. A short vacation is easier to fit in to our busy s____87____. The busier we are, the more important it is to connect with friends and family on vacation.

D.  Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题) 12分)

Ned and Miles are students at different colleges. Ned applies for an online school, while Miles attends classes on a school campus. The two students each believe that their school system is better than the other.

Miles: Sorry, no. I’ll have a class tomorrow and a lot of homework to finish up.

Ned:  Oh, thats too bad. Im so glad I take classes online. I can decide when, where and how to

complete my lessons. It saves a lot of time.

Miles: It sounds good, but I actually really enjoy going to class because its a great way to get to know other people. It also helps me learn how to work well with others. If I dont understand something, Im always able to ask about it in person. That saves me a lot of time and prevents misunderstanding.

Ned:  In an online class, I have to think thoroughly (彻底地) before asking questions. That teaches me how to solve problems on my own.

Miles: Do you ever run into technical (技术上的) problems in your online classes? If you cant open a file, how can you continue your learning?

Ned:  Its not a big problem. I can email the teacher or contact another student for help.

Miles: But answering questions through emails takes too much time. You may fall behind on your studies.

Ned:  You can fall behind, too. What if you get sick or your class gets canceled because the weather is bad? Those arent problems for online classes.

Miles: Yes, but theres usually a make-up (弥补) class if a class is canceled.

Ned:  In an online class, I dont have to worry about missing classes for any reason. I can always review the previous (之前的) lessons online.

Miles: Dont you feel lonely sometimes? I would feel lonely if I had to learn on my own.

Ned:  Im confident in learning by myself. Besides, an online class gives me more free time to take part in other activities.

Miles: I still prefer having classmates to brainstorm and discuss ideas with. I believe that improves my learning all the time.

Ned:  Im pretty self-disciplined (自律的), and I work better on my own. I can’t focus when working with others.

Miles: I guess everybody learns differently.
