Traffic rules in England
While-reading |
If you go to England, you must be very careful in the streets because the traffic drives on the left. It’s different from China. Before you cross the road, you must look at the right first, and then the left.
In the morning and in the evening when people are going to work or back home, the streets are very busy. You can often see traffic jams. everywhere.
When you go by bus in England, you have to be careful, too. Always remember: the traffic moves on the left. So you’d better have a look first, or you will go the wrong way.
As in many English cities, you can see lots of double-decker buses in London. Tourists always enjoy moving by them. People like to sit on the second floor to see the beautiful scene of the city. London is one of the best places for sightseeing.

l Do you often see some signs on the road? l Can you draw some of them and tell their meanings? |

Number one is a sign with the number thirty on it. When drivers see this sign, they must not go at more than 30 kilometers an hour. We see this sign when we are getting near a town. Number two is a sign that we're near a crossing. We must drive carefully. Number three is a sign that there is a bend in the road. Again, we must drive slowly and carefully. It is not safe to go round a bend very fast. Number four is a sign that there is another road coming in from the right. There is a junction at this place. Number five is a sign that there is a hill and number six is a sign that the road gets narrow. Drivers must go slowly and carefully. Number seven has the word "SCHOOL" on it. This is a sign that there is a school at the side of the street or the road. Perhaps there are children going to or leaving school. So drivers must look carefully and go slowly. Number eight is a sign with the letter "P" on it. The letter "P" means "Parking". At some places, there're the signs "No parking" or "No waiting". If a driver leaves his car near one of these signs, a policeman may come and write down the number of his car.

Dear Rose
I like your programmes very much. I'm now writing to ask you something about American social customs. My American friends want me to join them in their dinner party. I am very happy and have decided to go but I'm a little worried about it, too. The social customs in my country are very different from here, and I know little about it.
Should I bring a present, such as sweets or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I use the fork and knife? How can I let the family know that I'm thankful for their kindness?
Wang Lin
Dear Wang Lin
It's a good idea to bring a small present when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you may bring a bottle of drink if you know that your friends like drinking it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don't get there early. If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them. Try to be free at the dinner table. If you don't know how to use the fork and knife, just watch the other people, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, ask the person next to you.
If you like the food, say so. Of course, you'll thank them for the meal and for their kindness. It's also a good idea to send a thank-you card the day after.
